crappy day

well today has been a sad day in the hobby of fishtanks...this morning started out by me losing my small blue hippo...

....then this evening I came home to an empty tank....

...i must say that i had grown attached to these fish more than i knew. so its been a sad day.

no...no idea...just happened in one night. very odd.

I just want to make sure that if there was something wrong it was isolated to him and not your tank. He seemed\looked healthy?

The only things I can think of off the top of my head for a fish to go downhill overnight would be a malfunction with your tank- which you would probably see, some kind of super stress (on a tang ich would usually develop as a sign unless you treated him with copper or hypo before putting into the tank) ...

Or maybe something bacterial or parasite related. Those usually take a little more than just a night and you'd see some signs first.

well it wasnt just one fish...it was all of them...my tang was just the first-jason saw her this morning and didnt really look for the others- so they could have been dead too.

we checked the water and everything is fine...i really have no idea what happened.

If there was absolutely no sign of foul play don't forget about stray current in the tank... seems to be going around these days...

Wow that is just devastating. I misread what you said that he was the only guy in the tank. To loos everyone is awful =\

No heater malfunctions, nothing that could have dripped into the tank, no third party could have put something in etc etc?

The only thing I could think of that I have seen with my own eyes that is hard to tell with an untrained eye could have been something like flukes if it was a parasite.. It takes a lot of observing to really really tell when they are there and it just comes with experience.

I really dont know what could just wipe out a tank like that. No nearby lightning strikes? that'd be weird but you never know. When something so crazy like that happens I try to think out of the box if all of the usual things are eliminated.

You're 100% sure of your water's parameters? no bad tests, using refractometer..

It boggles my mind Again I'm so sorry to hear but if you aren't discouraged and want to keep on having fish it's best to try to diagnose what happens so if its preventable you can stop it from happening again

As it seems... are you sure no chemicle got into the tank somehow? Electrical shock can kill fish but I have never heard of anything that bad kill a tank full of fish in one night. There would have to be lots of stary current to do that much damage. Not to mention pixie would have most likely felt some sort of zap when pulling out the dead fish as long as she had a little cut.

i agree-apparently hes going to be replacing my corals too...im glad that one of my friends (cough chad) was there to support me in my time of greef....thanks bryan. lol.

So, the coral went too? I would definitely not put anything in the tank until you figure out what happened.

well i found my tiny clown goby alive in my filter sock-so i tore down my nano at my parents house (b/c i had no where else to put him but back in the death tank and i obviously wasnt going to do that) and rushed it to jasons but by the time we got it back he had died...so i set up my nano again at his house and now all my corals are doing HORRIBLE...my zenia looks like its melting and my fuzzy mushrooms are spitting out their insides and disappearing...and the rest look like their dying as well- but my water testers say everything is fine...i really dont understand.

what did you reuse rock,filter,sand,water?

i left half of the water and used r/o to fill the rest...i changed the sand (trying to rid myself of the flat worms) and thats it.

Did you have a sea hare or cuccumber in the tank? Anu small children that could have thrown something in the sump?

no i didnt have anything in the tank but corals..since i had moved everything to jasons.

Any spraying for bugs, or painting in the few days before the problem? New skin lotions, or maybe pefumes on your arms? It has to be something introduced to the tank to kill everything that fast. Water is the best sponge in the world for air born toxins.
