Crates to support rock?

Looking to understand what plastic crates I can use to put under my live rock. Are there any that have harmful plastics in them?

A lot of folks, including myself, use the eggcrates/lighting diffuser from Home Depot. There haven't been any problems for me. You can also purchase eggcrate from Bulk Reef Supply (they're black).

Just my opinion, but i would suggest you do not use egg crate unless you plan on taking it up to clean out under it on a regular schedule. you will find that debris will accumulate there too easily. I once put a small piece of egg crate on the bottom of my tank as a frag rack and after a month the amount of stuff that had accumulated there was incredible . IDK how big your tank is or how big the rock you are using but I would cut short (2-3") pieces of pvc pipe and then take those pieces and cut them into half moons. now you can place the rock on the pvc and they will allow water to flow under the rock. Just make sure the half moons are situated so the flow goes through them. Good luck, neil.

I used eggcrate to hold my LR above the sand. I used short pieces of PVC pipe as legs and tied them to the eggcrate with small cable ties. Toward the back of the tank (I have a rock wall DT) I did a 2nd layer of eggcrate on taller PVC 'legs'. Along the front edge of the LR wall I used some smaller rocks and corals in the sand to hide the edge of the eggcrate. It works great! I have mostly wide open sandy bottom for inverts and wrasses that like to sleep in the sand. I have great water flow under and behind the LR wall. There are lots of places for fish to hide and sleep. And after 18 months I've had no cyano bacteria at all.

It's not a common setup, but if you are considering a rock wall structure, I give it 2 big thumbs up.:thumbsup::thumbsup:

I love this idea. I'm about to change my sump out to a much larger one and wanted to put some of the liverock in the sump to open things up in the display. This sounds like a great time to do something like this.
Could you describe the pvc you used in terms of orientation, any cutting etc???

a friend of mine and i did a lil experiment. and found out that egg crates DO leach some phosphate, NOT much but some. i know most people have some type of machinery to fight off phosphate BUT if u don't, i wouldn't go with it.
