Trying to get that reef crawl together. Hope everyone has time to post a day they would prefer, so we can get some sort of consensus as to when the best date is for the event. Would be more than happy to start here, but whatever works for everyone.

How about Wednesday afternoon, say 5 or 6ish?? We can start at my apartment in University Place and I'll even bring some snacks

Hey Guys,

I haven't been involved really at all since I started my tank in January, but I was wondering what the deal was with the upcoming week (as in where you're planning on going and things of that nature). I live in Collegiate Suites in Blacksburg. Thanks!

Wed at 6:00 it is. univeristy place is behind the university city kroger on glade? how about we meet in the front left corner of the kroger parking lot?

would like to join in and put my place on the crawl list. I live in Dublin but should have some munchies for those that wouldn't mind making the trip. Front left corner of the Kroger parking lot, hmmm. just have to ask, is that facing or with your back to it?

see you guys at 6:00...mark

it's the kroger on university city blvd (not the main street one). front left corner as you are looking towards it from university city. we will wait there till 6:10 for stragglers, anyone coming after that can call my cell 540 921-7601 to meetup with wherever we're at.

Great to see there are some new reef club members. I am interested to see the changes that are sure to come in this next year with all of your tanks. Goes without saying that I had a great time at the crawl. Thanks for having me to your houses. :D Matt keep us updated on the cube. It's going to be sweet. :D Michael R

here's an example of an overflow box using the u-tube design. the 'weir' design you got off melev's site is just bad and prone to fail and just not work very well. you should be able to convert yours over easy enough and re-use the entire outer-box. i have a spare u-tube you can have. the key differences are with the round tube bubbles blow right through and do not accumulate if you have enough flow. plus the deeper box lets water fall down into it which skims the surface better. the pic doesn't show it well but there is a partition between the u-tube and the drain in the outer box so that it doesn't lose siphon.

and i was thinking about your scwds. dunno how much it would help, but it should help if you redid all the pcv and bumped up to 3/4" right at the pump threads. and maybe all the way up to 1" on the suction side.

the only thing with those u tubes, assuming they are similar to the ones at zooquatic, i hear the workers complaining about getting the flow started in those all the time...and they suggest pvc or ribbed tubing, i find the ribbed mixes the water up better and gets more air into it, it's all personal preference though...

good to meet everyone on the crawl, had a good time, and look forward to another one sometime in the new year.

to start them just stick a piece of airline up it and suck or use an aqualifter. then pull the airline out (don't be tempted to leave it in there with an aqualifter, sounds good on paper but it's one more thing to go wrong and is totally not needed) and you never have to touch it till you need to clean the tube (usually every 6 months for me). it's important to have clean fast flow going through it to blow bubbles through so they don't build up. any obstructions (like ribs) will make it easier for bubbles to accumulate. if you have to even look at it more than 2-3 times a year you are doing something wrong.

though there is 1 thing (and only 1 thing) about the cpr/melev design that is good. it's snailproof since it's sucking through a wide narrow path. a u-tube is just the right size for a snail to clog. so use a small piece of gutterguard around the inner perimeter of the inner overflow box.

had a great time, really appreciate the welcome you guys gave me, opening your homes, sharing your great tanks, answering every question and providing invaluable information. I have ordered the parts to convert the maxi 1200's to streams with the big propellers (going to convert two) ordered 2 Mag 12 to pump up the flow on the closed loops. will wait until next month for the 3rd MH. have drawn out the plans for the u tube overflow, I'm thinking the inside box will be 11" long, 3" wide and 5" high with dremmel sized teeth around the sides and front, the back will be 11" W 5"H and 7"H with dividers on the left and righ side that will be 3 3/4"H x 41/2 wid and spaced 2" off the left and right side. the 7 " in the middle with have 2ea 11/2" bulk heads to feed into my existing sump plumbling. will probable glue a strap to the outside box and make some slits for the inside box to allow adjustment using a couple of nylon screws. will make 1" pvc u tubes, should be a little nosie but that is what they make loud rock and roll for. REally looking forward to getting the tank fixed per all the suggestions and get the surprise Matt bag of goddies. Are you ready to accept any help Yet? I'm ready this weekend if needed. Have a garage that is fairly easy to work in while messing with acrylic. I'm going to cut the overflow box out tomorrow, glue it and then water test it Saturday, if it holds I think I paing it black to help take away for the white flash I sometimes see (distracting).

Matt, The garage and equipment is your for use, let me know and we'll get it done. Also, how would you like to make the reflector change, i'm in absolutely no hurry so whatever you schedule permits

What a great time we had, folks missed a great crawl and meeting meeting? Just a coiencidence meeint Bruce Willis, would have been even better if Demi was still with him, oh well maybe next time folks will make the crawl and who know who we may run into!!!.

Matt, let me know when you want to work on your sump, and I can help this weekend on moving anything you need help with.
Should I wait until i get the flow up in my tank before putting in the goodies your ging to give me???

see everyone soon, I hope...Mark
