Crazy dude holding a 6" Mantis shrimp

One might think that guy is gutsy. Another might think he is plain stupid. This case, he's nothing short of being plain stupid.

Maybe he has had it for a long time and the mantis is used to him. Started off feeding on a stick, moved to hand near the mantis, then touching the mantis... eventually holding the mantis.

Animals may not be intelligent, but that are certainly smart. ;o)
Shoot, my sailfin tang would probably let me pick him up if I tried.

They have the stregnth of a strike coparable to a .22 cal bullet.

I think if I was to get hit, I'd rather get hit by a boxer type mantis than the spearer type.

That is STUPID hahahahah.. I've seen guys on the boats get cut by dead ones that the calico's would puke up.

LOL, just crazy!

I'm very cautious when cleaning my mantis/quarantine tank with "Cuddles" lurking around. I've seen her shatter snail and crab shells like nothing. (Cuddles was her name when I got her from stomatopod.com) :)

Those things are delicious. Taste and texture like a mixture of lobster and crab.

what I don't get is why would you want to risk your right hand like that after winning the Cy Young?

They are all over the reefs here and I pick them up all the time. The strike is nothing like a 22 bullet. It is stronger than expected from most animals that size, but it will not split your finger or inflict great bodily injury. It is just a really strong flick and it stings a little, but that is about it. I am sure a large piercer would be a different story, but the smashers are not that bad. I thought just like the rest of you before I moved here and handled so many of them.

Oh my god man... OH MY ****ING GAAWDD!!!!!

He's insane... that's like swimming with a shark with roast beef on your back.

Saw in a science channel that they DID measure a strike of a SMASHER mantis shrimp and it DID measure to a energy of .22 cal bullet. I figure those guys aren't hitting you with all their might.
