Critters in Skimmer

Too often I have to take apart my skimmer to clean out a small critter from my skimmer. What is the best way to keep them from stopping my skimmer?

I have a Precision Marine Bullet 2 protein skimmer. The snails and other things get caught in the bullet injector chamber. It is a pain to clean them out. The pump to the skimmer is submersed in my sump.

Just put a screen on the intake to the pump feeding the skimmer. If you don't have screen for the pump, put the pump in a screened box in the sump. Get some needlepoint mesh from your local craft store or wal mart and wire tie it together into a box that is tall enough to stick out of the water. Put the pump in it, no snails will make it to the pump intake, so none will be pumped to the skimmer.
