bluenassarius is a hotter chic!!!

lol except that Sam (bluenassarius) is a guy...lol...
Sorry I don't have anything informative to add other than that they are neither photosynthetic or zoa preditors...How they end up on Zoas and if they hurt them or not I don't know...
Here is an article by Dr. Ron that may clear up some issues on these unique "blobs of protoplasmic goo"
http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-07/rs/index.php
HTH..

This genus is photosynthetic. They are obligate hosts of endosymbiotic diatoms that provide their energy. See the link dippin posted.

Hmmm, Dr. Ron says:

"Foraminiferans have been called the "the most common group of non-bacterial organisms in the world." They are in uncountable numbers in and on all ocean bottoms and in the marine plankton. I have worked with some foraminiferan predators called scaphopods. In some of the areas where the scaphopods are abundant and I have sampled foraminiferans, there are more than 70,000 forams per square yard of ocean bottom. These abundances appear to be typical or even on the low side for some marine environments. "

And, "Some species extend up off the bottom as a tree-like shape and have been documented to snare and eat fish or small shrimps. Others form networks of root-like growths that may cover large areas. None of this group has, to the best of my knowledge, been seen in aquaria, and in fact, only a few individuals of these deep- sea groups have ever been seen alive."

Soooo.... detrivores for sure, but some are predators. Asterinas have safe types and predatory types- why not these?

:D

I'll ask him about that. Both of my marine invert books say that they only prey on microfauna. Regardless, this genus is definitely not one of the predatory ones.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone who took the time to answer or debate.

I appreciate it.

With some looking around, I think I know how this was bumped...

As 650 replied.....interesting......

Looking forward to this thread continuing. I have no experiance, and would like to hear more.
