i'd say crocea are easier to keep than maxima. I myself have 3, i suggest occasional phyto feeding is a plus.

Croceas and Maximas both need very intense lighting. there both found in a shallow reef top environment. Croceas seem to be able to handle less then perfect water chemistry, where Maximas need everything to be very stable

what is going on with clams didn't maxima used to be easier to keep?
i have a baby maxima right know. my lighting setup consists of one 175w MH, and one 96w power compact.

how big is your tank, what kind of MH light is it (brand and Kelvin)and what type of 96w PC light is it??

the PC is actinic
the MH is a corallife pendent. 10 k bulb
my tank is a 50 gallon tank not a 55

IMO, keep it up in the tank and more closely to the halide. dont get to close to fast either. if thats your little guy in the picture you might want to consider feeding phyto as well untill it gets close to the 3 inch mark. good luck and enjoy your clam

I totally agree! IME, Tridacna maximas are the hardest to keep of all the Tridacnids.

They pretty much have always been a little more difficult to keep.

1. Most of the clams that are coming out from the clam farms are about 1-2" and difficult to keep.

2. Larger ones are being wild collected and if not collected correctly they will get a byssal infection and die.

3. Most croceas are wild collected from Vietnam and these people seem to know how to collect them correctly.

Still best to quaranitne any livestock prior to placing in your display tank!

i know but i have never liked croceas that much. there in current is big and the foot is huge. only reason i want one is because i cant find a blue maxima
