crocea clam question

I just purchased my first clam. It is a Crocea. My tank is 210gallons, 29.5" deep. I've got 3-250w MH's and 4 actinics(not sure of the wattage). I've located my clam on the sandbed on top of a dead coral skeleton buried in the substrate.

My question is: will the lighting be sufficient for the clam having it located on the sand, at that depth(29.5")?

Also, is there a more perfered K value of the MH bulb? Currently i'm running 10,000 K bulbs.

It's hard to say whether it will be enough light. I have mine on top of the rockwork under 150 watt 10ks. It's been there for about 3 years.

the crocea will do better higher up on the rocks, the 250W bulbs wont be able to penetrate enough light to the bottom of a 30" tank. 10K bulbs are fine, as long as you're happy with the colour.

I would have to disagree. I have a 30" with 250 MH and my crocea is fine on the bottom, especially with 10k bulbs.

i'm not sure what you disagree with......

from the picture posted and the generalized whiteness of the mantle, i would say there is very little doubt that clam would do better with more light.

I disagree that a crocea clam cannot be kept at the bottom of a tank, 30" under 250w MH's with 10k bulbs.

Learn to accept criticism.

A crocea can live 30" under 250w MH 10k light.

Clam looks bleached to me, I totally agree with twenty. Move that clam up higher on the rocks.

Crocea's are the most light demanding of all the tridacnids. It is rare to find them in very deep water in the wild.


250w of mh at 30" isn't enough light.

From experience, it is enough.

More light may help the problem, but I wouldn't stop looking at other issues.

i don't see what you're saying as criticism, just a difference in opinion. all clams / bulbs / bulb ages / ballasts / reflectors / situations etc. are completely different. my opinion is based on the information and picture provided by the OP and yours is based on what you see in your tank where the situation is not the same.

Yes, just a difference of opinion. You seemed to have a problem with mine. As an analogy, it's like the tang police saying you can't keep more than 1 tang in a tank. A crocea 30" below 250w MH 10k bulbs can work. The OP stated the clam is 30" below the light. From my experience and some others, this can be done

That's all I wanted to point out. Same here on the clam getting better.
