Can I keep a Crocea under 130 watts of PC in a 30 gallon tank ?
Must I keep the clam on the sand or can I nestle it up an some live rock, close to the top of the tank ?

Is a Maxima easier or more difficult ?

Thanks,
Allen

No you cant keep a crocea under 130w pc. A colorful maxima is probably out of the question also. MAYBE a duller looking maxima like a gold maxima up high within inches of the light, and that would probably be pushing it to. A desera or squamosa would probably do "ok" in you tank but would out grow it very fast.

I agree also. You can pick up a DE pendant for $250. I know this is more than pc but its not like the old days. MH are just much better.

You know I've been thinking a lot about this recently, and think I've come up with a theory. If you have to ask if PC's will work with a clam you probably don't have enough experience to make it work.

What do you all think? I don't think its impossible. It just doesn't leave any room for error.

I don't follow the "if you have to ask" logic... As a biomed person, I would have thought you'd had the experience of learning while experiencing before !

Just an FYI, I have had 2 people with lot's of clam experience tell me that you can keep a maxima with PC's. That said, not sure I want to try it given the mixed results I've seen reported.

Ive actually tried to keep a blue crocea and a gold maxima under 260w PC's. Thats why I said what I said. Both clams were 4 inches total distance from the light. The crocea was 4 inches in size and started fading in color after week 3. The gold maxima was about the same size and held his color alittle longer at about 2 months but still did start fading and turning a yellowish brown color instead of gold. Perfect water quality and fed live DT so that wasnt a issue. They just dont do well under PC's in my experience. Thats one of the reason I upgraded to MH cuz I love clams and would like them to thrive and not just survive for 6 months and slowly die off.

I would never try clams with anything less than MH, my crocea is in a 20g with 175w and am looking to go to 250w pc and t5 in my opinion no way for clams, I have wasted major $ over the years on lighting and once I went to MH will never use anything else

S3AL and gcrowptc thank for your input. I appreciate it and I hear you. Like I said, I think I will wait as I am planning to go to a MH/cp combo light in the near future.

Snprhed: I did not say "its ok to kill a few" and there is no reason you can not learn while you gain experience. In fact any scientist will tell you this is the case. As a biomed something... I would have hoped I was dealing with someone of more insight.

Your sarcastic attitude and willingness to mis-represent our conversation interests me. I think your a bit defective and I am glad that all you and I Have had to say is here in writing, so there's no confusion. In your case, I would suggest keeping your opinions to yourself, as your delivery reflects poorly on you !

I have have two very bright and happy Croceas six inches under 192Watts of PC's. The first is pushing a year in the tank the second 8 months both have grown and are extremely responsive. P.S why have forum if we criticize an honest and intelligent question

Thanks for the critique, but I didn't ask for it, and I don't know why you keep refering to my job. My whole point is there are a few people with the skill to keep clams in a pc tank. I think sometimes its luck of the draw with finding the right clam and other times its just implementing correctly. I truly feel that pc,s are very poor lighting for these creatures and its not fair to them to "try it". There are lighting systems that will work, that are very affordable. I even believe that a good VHO system has much more ability that a pc system. I really don't have personal experience with t-5 so I won't comment on them.

Aseidman, I have been posting and lurking here for a very short period and time. In that time This debate right here seems to be the biggest topic. I would seriously encourage you to look through the past 4-6 pages. Its not that its not a worthy subject its just that pc's aren't enough (IMO and other longtime reefers) . There are very suitable lighting systems for similar prices. I feel that the clams need an advocate because often the lfs is not. And yes I am sarcastic.
