I just got my first clam. He attached to a rock that I placed in the sandbed. Once attached I moved him up to be about 18 inches from the light (150k MH). This morning he was back in the sandbed. Now my question is-part of the foot was still on the rock. Is it common for them to leave parts behind when detaching? The only other thing I can think that might have done this is a big snail. I don't know if I should leave him in the sand. I think that is too far from the light, but I don't want him to detach and get hurt.

thats just the byssal threads that where left behind.sometimes if they are moved too quickly they will let go. place it back on a flat rock and when it reattaches slowly move it where you want

My clam has attached himself to the bottom of my tank, can I safely remove him to a better place or maybe to a rock? I did try to tug, he's stuck! I did not want to pull hard and hurt him in some way.

My one fish keeps puffing sand on him!

gently tip the clam to one side and take a sharp knife or razor blade and cut the threads as far away from the clam as you can
