Crocea placement

Isn't it true that croceas prefer to be on LR rather than the sandbed? I want to put mine in the spot where it will be the happiest. If on the LR, are there any special methods to placement (ie anything particular detail it prefers)?

Much thanks,
Kayla

Hey. Actually, I just moved mine to the rockwork an hour ago. Mine has always done well on the sandbed, but it seemed to be trying to attach to something,so, I'll see how this works. My guess is that they probably prefer it.

Thanks! My only concern is "hopping." I don't want to find him on the sandbed or such in the morning, or damaged in some way.

I placed mine on a sort of slope, so I placed a plastic algae scraper so that the clam is leaning on it. It hasn't fallen so far. I hope it will attach before long.

Good idea...mine's wedged between two rocks, so hopefully it will stay put as well. Good luck on yours! How long have you had it?

Thanks. I have had it several months, I think. Actually, it was sold as a different type of clam (it is actually a crocea), but it has done well under VHO this far. Here is a picture from when I was feeding it in Tupperware, which I guess I won't be doing anymore if it attaches :) :

Beautiful clam! I would post a pic of mine, but my digi camera is broken and currently undergoing surgery (I may need to buy a new one though).

They are refered to a Boring Clams. They commonlly bore into corals such as Porities. So in general I would say they do better in the rock. I always place mine on the rock.

Crocea definitely prefer the rock. Over time, they can bore so deep that the only exposed part of the clam is the mantle. My crocea finally settled into a depression that fit the outside curve of the clam on a large flat piece of rock.

Thanks for the info. He stayed on the rocks last night, so I guess he likes his new spot! thanks again.

What I've heard suggested and have done for my Crocea is to put him on a `bowl-shaped' or flat piece of LR. At least on mine he had a lot of the `foot', which over the course of a few months firmly attached to the rock. Now it seems permanently attached to it, but as it's not a major piece of my aquascape - it can me removed or moved if necessary.

It's only a few inches larger than the clam, but this has allowed me to move it when I changed the flow up and my Green slimer was starting to shade it. Actually found it a better space :)

But I'd keep the long-term in mind. They do better IMO on the rockwork [esp. if you don't have optimal lighting] - but if it's attached to your whole rock structure that might cause problems down the road - maybe detrimental to the clam. At least consider something for it to attach to, that can be very securely attached to the aquascape/LR structure - but might be able to be moved. [not to recommend moving clams, though]

Anyway, I need coffee it seems, but I was happy someone suggested letting the clam attach to LR + getting that stable then. If things worked out just right, you could probably still remove it once in a while and feed too.

I put mine in a scallop shell on the rocks as well. It seems to have attatched already, and i can simply move the shell if needed.

IMHO, you do not need to target feed a 3" crocea, however I don't see where it could harm the clam. Beautiful clam, BTW!

Thanks for in advice. Going to keep my eye out for a nice piece of LR at the LFS small enough to be moved around the tank once attached.

What is the best way to remove my clam from the attached large clam shell?
