SYDNEY, Australia (CNN) -- Steve Irwin, the Australian TV presenter known as the "Crocodile Hunter," has died after being stung in a marine accident off Australia's north coast.

Australian media reports say Irwin was diving in waters off Port Douglas, north of Cairns, when the incident happened on Monday morning.

Irwin was killed by a stingray barb that went through his chest, according to Cairns police sources. Irwin was filming an underwater documentary at the time.

Ambulance officers confirmed they attended a reef fatality Monday morning off Port Douglas, according to Australian media.

Irwin, 44, was director of the Australian Zoo in Queensland.

He and his American-born wife Terri Irwin became popular figures on Australian and international television through Irwin's close handling of wildlife, most notably the capture of live crocodiles.

Crazy....I always thought he pushed his luck. I thought an alligator or croc would have been the one to do him in....

WOW!!!!
I can't believe that!!!

I guess after taking so many risks you are eventually going to get caught. RIP Crocodile Hunter! I'll miss the show!

Sorry to his family and friends.

Wow, I would have never thought that he would die anything but a natural death. Getting stung by a stingray through the heart has to be one of the most unique deaths of all time.

From CNN: "Though stingrays can be threatening, their sting -- usually prompted by self-defense -- is not often fatal. The bull ray that apparently stung Irwin was "a one-in-a-million thing," Cropp told TIME. "I have swum with many rays, and I have only had one do that to me."

What a shame.

very shocking just read that on Yahoo's home page. very sad he was an inovator and broke trhough the mold to bring lots of great info to children and parents. he will be missed

one-in-a-million...more like one-in-one hundred million. very freaky accident

what a terrible accident. That guy had an amazing life and lived well.
I just feel for his two little children who will not grow up with their amazing dad.

very strange how somebody could die just like that in a freak accident doing something that he has probably done a hundred times over.I would have expected him to get bitten by a crock but not this.Sting rays are not aggressive. What a fluke.Goes to show you when your time is up its up.To bad he was a good guy and his goal was to try and show people that animals need to be respected and kept off the endagered list by giving people a better understanding of the animal. He was a person who liked to grab the animal and show people up close.Yes he did seem nuts but it was just his love for nature that made him like that. When your that type of person you want to show peple that animals are great and they should be respected aswell as protected. He will be missed, Good luck in the next world Steve
