I recently bought crushed coral at a lfs and it didn't have any labels on the bag except the shipping label. I put it in the tank and added water. Should I have washed it before I have added water or will it clear up?

u should have washed it.

Its still not too late to remove the nitrate trap out of your tank.

Trust me i had a CC substrate in my first nano 10g & battled nitrates up until i got rid of the CC.

I am covering te crushed coral with sand
I have only filled the tank with about 5 gal water so i will drain it.

thats even worse, everytime a fish decides to swim fast, its gonna kick up a HUGE SANDSTORM, for my cichlids i alwasy wash Crushed Coral, ur best bet is to eithor take it out completely

because in sw tanks it holds nothing but debris

or if you want to keep it in, Rinse it until it is almost clear, considering it looks like milk when water is first added.. Good Luck! its going to be a pain in the Bottom, but its necessary

A little crushed coral is ok but yes wash it. I sprinkled my sand with some bigger crushed coral for a more natural look. Works great. Tank is 5 years old and has never had a problem. And it is an overstocked 26 bow

Go sand over crushed coral.

Crushed coral can get food caught in it and will cause nitrate spikes.

Sand looks very natural and some nassarius and cerith snails do a good job at keeping it clean.

Like mentioned above, sprinkling CC over the sand gives it a nice touch and is a good idea if you plan on having any type sand burrowing gobies.
