crushed coral

I'm wondering if I can use some crushed coral that has been removed from a tank for about 6 months? It will be going in a stand alone refugium and I was (am) concerned about spiking Ammonia, Nitrite and P.H.. I will be putting new salt water in the 'fuge and do have the ability to restrict or prevent water flow in case a cycling is needed. The system volume is 85gal. before the 'fuge for informational purposes. Is there anything I should do to the c.c., short of throwing it away unless that's all I can do, that would help? You can use it. Your live rock should handle any spikes unless you're adding 50lbs at one time. Add it in batches. The other option is to bleach it. Half bleach half water overnight and then let it thoroughly dry.
