Crushed Coral

Hey guys, I just wanted to get advise on using crushed coral for you substrate. I already put it in my tank and it is currently cycling. Any advise will help. Thanks

I'd advise against it. I put most of the blame for my crash of some years ago on CC. It tends to trap a lot of detritus, and the large size and sharp edges discourage benthic life [worms, etc.] that keep the substrate clean. Sand is much better - doesn't trap the crud as much, smoother grains that don't irritate the critters, and greater surface area for helpful bacteria populations. As big a hassle as it sounds, it's far easier to replace it now when things are just starting than later when you've got animals in. Sorry to be the messenger, but I hope you're spared the frustration and $$$ it cost me.
