Crystal Clear Water.....HOW?

Borchers

Reefer Who needs Help!!!
Ok so what's the deal. I'm doing 25 gallon WC, Carbon, GFO and filter socks. I can't get that crystal clear water. Always something there. How do you guys do it? What's your secret people. :mad2:

Avast marine ozone reactor, coralife luft pump, ozotech 250mg/hr generator, nextreef monster reactor with brs carbon, wet skim.

My secret to crystal clear water? Chemipure elite in my overflow. Did away with a carbon reactor and just replace my carbon bag every couple months. Also heavy skim.

Ozone man, ozone. Not only keeps fish in perfect shape* but keeps the water crystal clear.

*I don't have an MBA but I did stay at a holiday inn last night

Carbon should buff your water bro. Cheap solution, maybe your not using enough? Or maybe it's tumbling in your reactor and crushing into a fine powder?

I have luck with Carbon as well, and my water is super clear. Im looking into UV or Ozone, leaning towards Ozone, but not because Psycho is doing it :)

Ozone clears the water crystal clear by breaking down yellow phenols. The more livestock you have the more waste is produced and turn your water yellow. Ozone also breaks down chemicals responsible for chemical warfare between corals. Using ozone, i do not need to quarantine fish because it kills parasite larvae. It prevents bacterial blooms during carbon dosing. Adds oxygen at night when I have it on - O3 to O2. I would never run a large system without one. On a 700+ gallon system, I use less carbon than I would have if I wasn't using it.

The initial setup cost is under $500. You can use a skimmer but the ozone reactor way is better. I plan to run a koi pond with ozone rather than uv. UV sucks compared to ozone. Just go to youtube and search ozone on both reef tanks and koi ponds and you will see the difference in clarity. Stop by my place if you are in my area.

Crystal Clear Water.....HOW?

I agree about ozone is better than UV specially its 100x more energy efficient but you need a reactor either a skimmer with a build in or a actual reactor but make sure you have your ORP not higher than 400 IMO.
It control the outbreak and I am a big fan of ozone too but I can't say it cures all. I am still afraid of velvet outbreak too. So I still use copper for 2 weeks before introducing new fish.

My elk groove friends will disagree but it works for me in the past.

Sean, are u sure your not getting micro bubbles. I though my water was dirty for a long time but after I got an orp meter and ran ozone my orp got to 440 and water still appeared cloudy. Found micro bubbles were the cause.

No bubbles. That I know. It's been crystal clear before. I don't know what's up. Gonna add Purigen for now with new filter socks. I'm going to look into Ozone.

Crazy note! I have an ORP controller. I didn't know what it was for. Now I do. Won it at a MARS BBQ!

Alright listen I am sure all the advice everyone is giving here is spot on but truthfully you should be able to have crystal clear water with next to nothing. I have always had crystal clear water with just a filter sock. Its more likely something is wrong with your setup ie not enough flow and turnover. The products everyone is speaking of are awesome and can make your tank brilliant but you should be able to enjoy some beautiful water without them

If you have a tank that has a few wrasses and other small fish sure you don't need much equipment to maintain the water crystal clear. Try that with over 10 tangs, 8 rabbit fishes and at least 5 large adult angelfishes and your water quality will diminish quickly. Since Shawn's system isn't as big, I think he can get away with carbon in a reactor and wet skimming to make his water crystal clear.

What equipment is needed to run ozone?

airpump, ozone generator and something to turn it on/off. you don't need orp to monitor or control it just like you don't need a ph controller to control a ca rx. a routine on/off schedule would work.

so somehting liek the Red Sea generator will work just have my apex control it and failsafe if orp too high keep off?

Don't get a red sea. It is notorious for breaking down. Get the ozotech from bulk reef supply which is all metal. I don't even use an air dryer. Just clean it with warm water every so often. I don't use orp to monitor or control the generator. I use the apex to turn it on past midnight to 6am. The water is crystal clear when I wake up. Basically the tank recharges itself every morning. I also scheduled it to run from 2pm to 4pm and the water remains crystal clear when I arrive home from work.
