CSS skimmer break in

I have set my 65 with water (no salt) and I have added teh CSS 125 skimmer in the sump. The bubbles its creating are basically like I took an air pump and just let it bubble in there with no diffuser (make sense?). Basically, no microbubbles, just bublbles. Is this normal for the break in period? I figured it would pretty white with bubble right out of the box.

I know there is a break-in period. Just what happens in that break in period

As always....thanks a ton!

You may have to adjust the height of the pump in the water in order to get more bubbles. I would suggest getting the pump as close as you can to the top of the water in order to make sure you get the best bubble production. Also make sure that there is nothing blocking the venturi or airline tubing leading into the pump. Break in on a CSS is about 2-3 days... but you should be seeing microbubbles... but i may be because you have no salt in the tank... i am not sure

I wouldn't think it would be the salt because some people with chichlid tanks use skimmers as well. But I could be wrong. I have the pump about 2 inches from the waterline. Should bring it up closer? The manual recomends 3inches.

Not sure about not having salt either. But you should be having some micro bubbles. I've got a 125 hanging on the back of a 75 gallon and it took about 2 1/2 weeks for it to get broken in. I also put a 220 in a sump under a 90 gallon and it only took about three days. I think the reason for a break in period is to allow the slight film of oils used for protection in the pump to be washed off. Then after it gets a good film of fishy water it should be fine.

lets test the salt theory.....I had a box for my nano that is for 25 gallons. I poured that into the tank. SHouldn't take about an hour to disolve. I know that won't be all the salt I put in, but it should start producing some microbubles....i'll post results in a little while

I was under the impression that skimmers did not work in fresh water tanks....

X2 Skimmers only work in saltwater.

actually reading some....there is a different skimmer for freshwater....so....thats my fault. So after the 25 gallon salt bag went in the microbubbles have started to form.

and my cats are enjoying watching the bubbles.

thx!
