Ctenochaetus flavicauda - White-tailed bristletooth tang

Anyone keep one of these? If so what are they like temperament-wise?

Thinking of adding a tang to my 90g reef, alongside my coral beauty, clowns, banggai's and mandarin.

I like Kole tangs also but have read they can be a bit aggressive, also I believe C.flavicauda stays a bit smaller so might be a better option.

Have a pair. I think 90 gallons are to small for these fish. Should be min 125 gallon. But it is up to you. I have done mistakes also so I can't give you advice.

They are swimming and grazing algea the hole time. In my opinion they are friendly and the smallest Ctenochaetus.

Thanks for the input, would you say they need more space than C.strigosus then, even though they are smaller?

The general consensus seems to be that 4ft/75g is minimum for C.strigosus so I thought it would be fine in a 4ft/90g but I certainly don't just want to cram one in so would be interested to hear your thoughts?

It can't get you advise. I have a very large tank about 1350 gallon. Before I had a 175 gallon tank. In these tank I had an Achilles and that fish bring hectic into it. In the larger new tank Achilles isn't a hectic swimmer. Also Leucosternum und Hepatus which called hectic are very relaxed in my large talk . So I think that two flavicauda will also be hectic in 90 gallon. It will work presumably. But I can't say if you will have fun. In my old 175 gallon two flavicauda will work definitely. But you can't lost anything. When you don't like the tangs you can give them away. Flavicauda you can't buy every day. I wait nearly a year to become these fish. Also they are the cutest of adult Ctenochaetus. Enough guys will take them.

I might have to see how available they are over here in the UK, I must admit I've never actually seen one in a LFS but do like the look of them from the pics i've seen.

If they are available I may try adding one and see how it goes, I'd prefer not to give anything away but worst case scenario like you say there would probably be quite a few people willing to take it if it did not work out.

I've never personally owned one but this fish is on my short list if I put a tang in my 240 I'm finishing up. I have, however, owned a Kole / Yellow Eye tang which is similar although larger in my 100 gallon. One thing I noticed as already mentioned is that it is a constant grazer. To me, it prefers more things to graze on rather than the width of the tank. So lots of rocks, nooks, caves, and what not for algae to grow so they can scrap off. Most will say plenty of swimming room but I think it is more surface area.

In fact, the best thing I ever did was leave a area of glass alone that had constant algae growth near my window. It was his/her go-to spot when it finished the Nori. It ate just about everything and was a very active fish. It did not get along with a purple tang I put in the tank so I ended up removing the purple because the Kole was first and I really liked its activity.

If your 90 is not that deep or you don't have enough rock I'd probably not entertain any tang. That is just my own opinion and have seen them in smaller tangs than the one you note.

White Tails are 6.5 in and Tomini Tangs are 6 in. Both are on my tang list for my 150 gal tank if I ever see one for sale at my lfs.

I had a Yellow in my 100 gal corner tank but it had lots of rock and space all around the rocks to swim and a bridge in the middle back to do figure eights horizontally and vertically. It took full advantage.

My tanks 48x24(h)x18 with around 100lb of rock with fairly open placement so there are plenty of nooks and boltholes. i feed heavily to keep mandarin and nps gorgs happy so there is always an annoyingly persistent crop of algae.

I wouldn't want to add any tang though if the tank would be too cramped for them. i was just going off min tank sized previously recommended on here for Koles (4ft/75g) but the thread was from a few years ago so opinions may have changed.

IMO, I believe the Tomini will be the better option. Remember, all Tangs have the chance of being aggressive.
