Cube tank thoughts

Recently my wife and I have decided to make plans to purchase our *New* tank. The system I have now I picked up for a very decent price. It was from someone getting out of the hobby and it was a turn key setup ready to go. We wanted to see if we loved the hobby and more importantly stayed with it.

Well we have been working with this tank and learning as we go for 7 months now. So now we would like to start making plans for our new tank. So here is were I would like some feedback please.

We really like the looks of the Cube tanks. We are leaning towards a Miracles tank. But I have few questions. These are just some random thoughts here. I would like the tank to be 2ft deep maximum. No deep tank for me. So what are some sizes for a cube tank? Meaning like what would be the dimensions on a 150 gallon cube at 2ft deep? Is that even possible? Would it need bracing?

Are there any members that have a bigger cube tank on URS? Would love to see some pictures. Are there any issues or concerns going with a cube tank instead of a rectangle? Just looking for some input or concerns from fellow members about this as we move forward with our plans for a new build thread. Thanks...
 
a cube 36x36x24 would be 135 gallons. Miracles makes gorgeous rimless aquariums! there is someone with a build thread in the forum and its really sweet.
 
I have a marineland 60g 24in cubed tank..love it..Also I think Marineland has one larger than mine,not sure though..
 
I really like the look of cubes too.
Can you cube owners post some pic's of your set ups?
Also, If you come across some cube threads please post the links here.

marineland just put out more cubes. a local pet store has several on display. i like the way they look ,more than how they perform. i would really think hard about cube larger than 60 gallons or so. i did see a cool 45g cube in md recently. it had one socccer ball sized piece of rock covered in macro algea,and gorgs. for the most part,cubes end up being expensive w/little usable space.
 
Don't really see how they're more expensive. Cubes can save on lighting though -don't need a long light -For example a 60 Gallon could be lit effectively with a single 175-250w MH. IMO they're far more natural than a wall of rock with little flow behind the stack that you see in the longer dimension tanks, and if set up correctly offer far more "viewability" with at least 2 decent sides to look at. I LOVE the larger cube. In fact I have a half build plywood cube that will end up being about 200 gallons. -It's my someday project...

if u compare a standard 29 gallon tank to 29 cube your going to pay at least twice as much. (tank wise). aquascapeing is nice,but Imo limited. 90% of the cubes out there do a central blob,or do a fruit stand against the rear wall. i'd spend the money on a longer,shallow tank if it were me. i love my cube ,but truthfully it seems to be a glorifed 5gallon bucket. fish don't get to strech there legs.
 
Thanks for all the replies. I see good and bad points as with most scenarios. I was concerned about the length as I have a few tangs. They seem to love the 6ft home they are in now as does my CBB. And they use every bit of it too.

My wifes concern is how far the cube will stick out into the room. I like the fact that 3 sides would be easily viewable but also have to keep her happy ;)

Guess I'll have to go do a lot more research before we make a decision. The canopy and stand make no difference as we are going to have new ones made either way.

If any one reading this thread has a cube tank lets post some pics or links. Thanks....

Thanks for posting pictures. I have to say we mocked up some cube sizes tonight using card board and tape. We were quite surprised when we did that. Surprised in a way that for some reason the gallon was correct but the tank looked small to both of us amateurs :)

We did 150 gallon, 36 X 36 X 27 standard Marineland cube. It just didn't look like a lot of swimming room for our Tangs and CBB. Would probably make a great Coral tank but sadly I think we will be going with a rectangle tank. Not sure yet...
 
hi dave, that is great that both you and your wife are into this hobby, it sure make decisions on things a whole lot easier. I am no expert, hell i can barely grow sps, but will attempt to answer some questions u have, please correct me.

dimension of a 150gal 2' high would probably be something like 3.162277660' * 3.162277660' * 2'(inner area), so is it possible, probably not, but miracles can build your pretty much anything. you dont need bracing (rimless) if you went with thicker glass like 1/2".

Depending on the floor plan you were working with, you could make a large cube aquarium the centerpiece of a room. Picture a 48x48x24 high cube with a center overflow in the middle of the room. It would be viewable from all four sides, the aquascaping would certainly be unique, and your tangs would have plenty of swimming room "around the circle" of the 4 foot wide cube.

An aquarium like that makes a much better living focal point than a television IMO.

Adam that sounds nice but we decided to stay right around the size we have now. Not looking to go bigger...... yet ;)

briangsxr1000 what are the dimensions of that tank? Is it drilled? Rimless? Let me know..
