Foster & Smith have a package that includes a sand sifting sea star and a cucumber with a bristle star. I have heard mixed things about cucmbers. Any experience or thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks
I have heard that tiger tails are better than holothurium edulis in that regard. What scares me is that a new tank [likely to need cleaners badly] is inherently unstable, apt to produce the very conditions of ph/ alk spike and fall that may stress a cucumber and cause it to release poison. If you get one, start a log and test daily, and have a supply of carbon standing by: it will help in a poisoning incident.
i added a yellow cucumber 2 months in and then read it could be toxic if dies.its a year and a half and its doing fine.i think their danger is overrated.
the cukes that fall under Holothuria sp. are usually safe, in reguards to wiping out a tank. however if they get sucked in to a powerhead or something and their flesh is spread through the tank, they can wipe out the tank. these cukes are generally the sand sifter type.

the cukes that came w/ my TBS rock shipment largely seem useless. they are either on the top of the glass walls, or on the rock. i never see them in the sand, sifting anything. (they are the brown, knobby cukes. i think TBS refers to them as donkey dung cukes)
I have had only bad luck with Tiger Tails. They have been sucked into the Powerhead and eaten by my Horseshoe crab. So far nothing died in the mess but I haven't bothered with cukes anymore.
