Curing Live Rock

its not that life is spontaneous but that it is triggered by other factors such as nitrites...wastes..fish foods..such as spirulina which in some cases introduces algae

"Don't confuse receeding with dying."

well, considering none of the algae that came with the rock ever regrew after the rock cured.....i'd say it died...yup....died.

"The ONLY way algae can grow there is if it is there.
Don't you agree?"

uuhhh, nope.

no, i can set-up a new tank with nothing but aquarium gravel, some salt mix and light and i'd get algae......

I think it is time to listen to the PhD. Algae CAN NOT appear in a tank unless it is already in the tank. Whoever says it can needs to find themselves a good biology book. Just because you can't think of a way algae got into the tank doesn't mean that it didn't. Ammonia DOES NOT kill algae, but it helps to control its growth. Algae blooms are related to the control of nitrite/nitrate level, the algae has ALWAYS been in the tank it just shows itself when parameters are not correct!

Just the aquaculture/molecular biology major's point of view!

Do you actually believe that the first time you get a frag from someone, its not going to have algal spores on it?

Also, cooking will kill algae, but algal spores are pretty damn tough to kill, and I dont think it will kill them.

Rich,

Perhaps you should go back and read my post again, I AGREE with what you are saying, the only way algae gets into the system is if WE put it there. I was commenting on the post about if you put NOTHING in the water but salt and a light you will get algae (That comment is impossible, algae doesn't just generate)

And I also agree with your spore comment!!:)
