Curing Live Rock????

So I just put in my order for 20lbs of Haiti live rock from Drs. Foster and Smith's eTropical.com. Had a local supplier of live rock, but was not impressed with the conditions of their tanks and feel I will be getting a better product. My question is on Curing, on their website they tell you to put it in a 30g plastic trash can with twice weekly 100% water changes until it is cured or it will kill all your fish and such in your tank with the die off. I have just set up my tank and the only thing in it is this "live sand" substrate I bought in a bag from Petco. Can I safely cure it in my tank since there is nothing in it? Or will it kill off whatever organisms/bacteria came in the sand? Also, do I have to do a full 100% water change twice a week? For one in the tank it wouldn't be a truly 100% change, secondly I use DI water, and can burn through a cartridge in about 10-15 gallons of water produced. Thanks for the help!!!!

you can safely cure it in your tank, but the advantage of doing it outside the tank is that you don't introduce the 'crud' into your system. you can brush/swish/dunk/slosh/giggle/etc... the rock in the containers as you cure it and remove allot of crud/sediment/etc.... and have a much 'cleaner' rock once you introduce it to your system. the choice is yours but I'd recommend the trash cans myself.
