Curious whether anybody's done a super-long tank as a 'partial' reef...

...ie, lighting for LPS corals at one end, or at one spot, and as a lower-light tank further on. I've heard a lot of people worry about shadows from braces, etc, but not heard about anybody just concentrating coral growth at one spot and letting the rest go as it will. Just curious.

Does it count letting your entire tank go as it will? Because I've done that.

But, I'm curious too. A 12' ray tank with 4' of coral at one end would be pretty fantastic.

I seen a tank on here with one end lit for LPSand softy, and he other end hardly lit at all. Had some shrooms, algae etc in it. It was neat looking to see the contrast of the different ends. Can't remember the thread tho, sorry

It isn't a long tank (90G), but a guy in our local reef club has his rocks stacked to one side of his tank full of coral an the other side is a DSB (8" or so) for his garden eels. It's a pretty cool setup. He has 2 AI sols over the reef side and 1 over the garden eels.

I know its not a private aquarium, but the Academy of Sciences here in San Francisco has a 213,000G Reef tank that is separated by coral type, or at least the viewing sections are separated.

I have only 3 radion pros over an 84" tank, and I have the "shadows" lined up with the trenches between rock islands.

My friend with a 550 gallon tank has lighting zones and flow zones with surge so he keeps SPS and selected LPS in appropriate areas. Gorgeous tank.

i have an 8 foot 240.i first lit the tank with a 6 foot fixture centered over the tank but the shadows were growin some funky algae so i built a 8 foot led fixture. much better looking imo.
