current fission nano skimmer

i was wondering if anyone had any ideas on how i could take a nano fission (which looks like its designed to be used in tank) and use it outside the tank--hopefully attached to the back of the tank in a 'closed loop' manner.

this will be for a very well fed 10g tank.

thanks for the ideas!

I recall that some people were disappointed about their Fission nano skimmers. I wonder how well a TAAM nano skimmer or an ASM mini-G works. I think that 8Ball had a mini-G. Both of these are external skimmers.

I've seen a mini-G runing for a long time, and personally I was very disappointed. It was running as in-sump so I imagine the water level effected the performance, but it didn't skim anything like the ASM 1-3's do.
In my opinion, the nano fission isn't a very well designed skimmer. But with some modification, there's possibilities. I'm not 100% sure how it works from the pictures. Does it drain like the Seaclone100/150 from the top overflow? If that's the case, the modification possibilities are limited.
You could always get some 3' PVC, a funnel, MJ 1200, and a pint sized plastic jar from wally worl and DIY it up! :)

ownage, do you have any pics of your diy venturi skimmer?

i'm hoping not to take any space from inside the tank--its only 10g...

thanks,
tim

Yea, I know what you mean about tank space. Very important in a 10g.
I don't have any pictures of the seaclone 100 that I modified, but if I have time to swing by work tomorrow I can snap a few. I have it fitted for in-sump use, because I was missing the tank hang on tubing. It only took me about 10mins to modify it, very easy to do. It's on a 135g tank and pulls out a full collection cup about once every 3 days of nasty dark brown junk.
Is your 10g the typical 12 9/16" tall? I've never tried to build a HOB type skimmer, but I've got 2 free classes tomorrow, I'll see what I can think up if you want.

Well, took about an hour but I was able to put this together.

It's 3" in diameter and 12" tall w/o collection cup. Should fit right on the back of the tank. Good size for a MJ 1200. Has a neat little length adjustment on the output side like the HOB Terminator. I'm going to throw a little venturi on the intake and run it tomorrow, see how it works. I've never completely built a HOB skimmer before, but it should work well. I believe it cost about $21 in parts plus $25 for the pump.
I can write out all the parts and assembly instruction, or if you want I could just sell you this one haha. I don't need it, but it sure is fun building them!

I don't see modifing a fission nano skimmer for out of tank operations. I really think the small cheap idea was what was used for design. The collection cup and return are the same peice, and lots of microbubbles. I've only been running mine for a week but there are the same amount of microbubbles as when i first installed it. I will say if you can find away around the microbubbles its probably a good skimmer. Its small. takes up about as much room as my heater. IF its all reef then i might would use it instead of a power filter. Just me though, hope i helped. If you need more info or a pic of intank size or anything let me know

i got the fission--the only problem so far is that i'm filling the cup each day, and its pretty wet. the book even said it would dry out as it was used more, and you could dry it some by raising it higher in the tank, but i cant raise mine any higher. maybe its my imagination, but the water already looks cleaner! i was thinking of running ozone on it for a few minutes too :)

Cool. Skimmers usually have a 2-3 "break-in" period, so it will probably fill the cup a lot at first. Is it releasing any microbubbles into the tank? I've heard some people say it puts a lot of bubbles into the tank if you run it on a biocube system. Some ozone would rock! haha
Can we see some pics of the tank? I bet a 10g nano-reef would be pretty sweet.
