Custom Cabinet for 90g Reef (Build Thread)

Hmmmm...interesting. Using that calculator, looks like I'd need 36oz of B-Ionic vs. only 6oz of Kent TurboCalcium to raise my levels up to 420ppm. Wish I would have found that link before wasting my 2-part stuff....but you know what they say, hindsight is 20/20.

Thanks!

No problem, it's a very useful site -- I found it when trying to raise my Mg levels using Salifert liquid magnesium... a very expensive approach ;)

I picked up a SeaChem magnesium test kit today, and after the longest testing process I've ever encountered, my reading was 1062ppm. According the online calculator, need to add about 70oz of Kent Tech-M to raise that up to 1400ppm! That seems so strange..but it is what it is. So, I slowly poured my entire 16oz bottle of Tech-M (since that's close to the recommended 1/3rd total dose per day) into the VorTech pump and will pick up more tomorrow. I also added 6oz of Kent LiquidCalcium.

I'll keep you posted!

wow what an amazing build. you've motivated me to take a week off when busy season is over with to do this with my dad. Quick question. Have your books had any issues with the moisture of the tank? My tank will be about twice the total water volume and I'm a bit worried about any books I put around the tank.

Thanks in advance

None whatsoever.

While looking around on RC I glanced upon a banner ad for www.yourreef.com and for whatever reason clicked to check it out. The website is simple and relatively small -- but what caught my eye were the low prices on their frag packs. 20 SPS frags for $175, 10 SPS for $99, 9 Zoos for $99, etc etc etc. On top of that already great deal, overnight shipping is free for orders over $175 (and on top of that, there are no hidden charges for boxing, heat packs, etc).

Long story short, I placed an order for 10 SPS and 9 Zoos for $198 and paid a little extra ($15) to have FedEx deliver it on Saturday, since of course I'm not home to acclimate during the week with work and all. I placed the order on Friday morning and the box of corals was delivered at 9:30am the following Saturday morning.

I was surprised the box was so small, and was also worried because it was dripping water.

Inside the little styrofoam box was some wet newspaper and a single heat pack. This shipment was from California to Georgia, and it's been unseasonably warm in the south so the single heat pack didn't concern me.

The frags were individually bagged in tiny plastic bags and filled with water. Some frags (each in a seperate small bag) were combined together in one larger bag, not sure why. Therefore, you won't count 10+9 bags in this picture.

I drip acclimated the new corals for a little over 2hrs, then slowly glued them one-by-one to rocks in the aquarium.

I tried taking some pictures of the corals after everything was in the tank, but I can't for the life of me take decent pictures with my digital camera (even in macro mode). With the exception of two of the acroporas, every SPS was showing polyp extension and all Zoos had opened up.

Overall, I'm very, very pleased with my YourReef.com experience and will highly recommend them to anyone interested in a box full of frags for a fraction of what you'd pay at the store.

thanks for the detailed account of the web livestock purchase. It makes me want to try out that site, especially with the prices. Let us know how the livestock acclimates

i have the best of both worlds.

get to watch RedEDGE2k1 build an awesome system on line and swing by Your Reef in person at least every two weeks. john (the owner) is a model buisness man and supporter of our reef club. neat to see how he ships as i've never had to do that. going to his store is like being a kid in a candy store. to bad momma doesn't follow me around with her purse anymore :)

A long read, but worth it. Love the stand. My wife loves it to and is now at least thinking about my newest "wet" dream of a 24Hx30Wx96L 325G room divider(partial divider I guess) . I want it to sit directly in the middle of the basement and be 4 side viewable. Your stand has given her many ideas of the things it could be used for other then holding up a tank.

I would stop short of calling the 250w halides "mega heaters" in my case, considering they are a full 12" above the water line, with an additional 10" or so of air space from the bulbs to the top of the cabinet enclosure....At this point, I'm not even considering fans anymore.

What a silly, overly optimistic boy I was!

I was trying to watch LOST last night but couldn't pay attention because all I could focus on was my 2nd metal halide bulb turning on & off every 5 minutes. The AquaController is programmed to turn off one metal halide if the water temp gets above 83.5, and the second if it gets above 84. With the house A/C set to 70° in mid February, and the single King Air 6" fan blowing across the water surface, the temp still peaks at 83.6 and drops back to 83.5 when the 2nd bulb turns off....and this cycle continues all night, unless I open my balcony doors and watch TV under a couple blankets.

Obviously, this ain't workin. So this morning I bit the bullet and ordered a chiller from Premium Aquatics, since they have their Pacific Coast chillers on sale. I picked up the 1/10hp model for $335, since it's sleak & white and can sit next to the cabinet without looking terribly ugly. Also, I've read great reviews on this little chiller saying it's powerful for it's size, and pretty quiet with it's 38db noise rating.

I understand that with my ~120g total water volume I probably won't get a 10° drop in water temperature out of this little guy, but if it can maintain 80°-81° this summer I'll be happy.

Bummer :(,
You need to move up here in the upper Midwest. Heat is not an issue right now!

Does the chiller need venting to the outside, or is the latent heat dissipated into the room?

How about an updated FTS now that all of those frags have had a chance to settle in?

I'm just gonna sit it next to the tank and let it do it's thing. If it heats up the room, so be it. My concern is noise, I just hope it's no louder than the Euro Reef skimmer.

I can't for the life of me take good pictures of the new coral with my digital camera...so no go yet.

Great looking setup! I'm tagging along as I'm redoing my setup and stand and I'll be using some of your that you've included in you stand and hardware.

I received the Pacific Coast CL-280 chiller and planning how to connect it in-line with my Eheim 1262 return pump.

The chiller has hose connections for either 1/2" or 5/8" tubing. However, it doesn't really matter which size tubing is used because the actual hole that the water flows through to get inside the chiller is 1/2" or maybe even smaller (it's small). Everyone says it's best to plumb the chiller in-line with the return, however I'm worried the tiny chiller connections will create a bottleneck in my return plumbing and be detrimental to my filtration turn over, not to mention the life of the pump with all that resistance.

My question: Do I have anything to worry about, or can 1/2" PVC/hose still allow ~500gph flow without harming the $130 Eheim return pump?

Here's a quick sketch:
