I'm not so much a DIY guy, but I am looking to have a stand built. I would love to see some photo's of your custom built stands for inspiration toward my own.
BTW, if someone has a link to an similar but older thread please post.
Here's the canopy and stand I've built, the pics are only partway through the finishing steps, the current finished product looks a heck of a lot better than this but it'll give you a design idea or two.
Here's a shot during construction but after steaming of the end profile of the bent wood. The technique is called kerfing, it involves cutting through the majority of the wood with a table saw (in this case I left 3/16 on a 5/8 board), and then steaming the whole piece.
In order to do this I built a large steambox and used a propane torch to heat the water and route it into the box, after about two hours the wood was pretty much the shape I was after.
Thereafter I built a an airplane wing style form to profile the bent piece to that aided in keeping things square. The photo shows the bent piece on that form. If I get a bit of time I'll dig up some more photos of the process.
Steaming of wood should be done on pre-kiln dried wood, which isn't that easy to find. I did this on kiln dried wood that I soaked overnight, if I were to do it again, I'd be patient and find some kiln dried wood. That said, it worked.
