Custom tank, pic intense...

Does your pistol dig extensive burrows all over the tank like a jawfish. I just got a orange spotted goby and a candy cane pistol and he has built a burrow in the sand inside a rock. Do you think he could have excavated that rock out. I forget what it was shaped like when setting up the tank, but anyways, tank looks really good. I would probaly get some nassarius snails to mix up your sand bed and to have your pistol always working and building new tunnels/burrows.

See that hump of sand in the middle of the tank ? That was the low spot two weeks ago. The nassarius would get buried like a couple of frags I've lost to the pistol shrimp. I've learned that if I can't get frags high on the rock not to bother.

I have a question, do you need that large of substrate for a pistol shrimp? I wanted to get the Hi Finned Banded Goby with the Pistol shrimp to view their behaivor together. Would they maybe use LR and fine sand substrate to build caves? I have the Arag Alive Fiji Pink Sand. It's .5mm to 1.5mm. Would that work for them? I like your tank. It looks good.

You dont need a large substrate, the pistol shrimp will use the LR and fine sand to build caves. But it does help, to set a few pieces of rubble of LR or shells near his cave to help fortify it.

I know what you mean about the pistol and frags, I had to start using putty to keep mine in place. If they fell or were near the bottom, the would be lost to the back of the tank until he redecorated...lol.

Marinegirl,

The original tank had a finer substrate and the pistol was always searching for building materials. So when they were moved to this tank I made sure it had plenty of materials to fortify it's tunnels. I put a couple of inches of sand on top of this,

BTW, make sure the live rock is firmly on the glass bottom.

Agu, were you ever able to get any good pictures of the shrimp's tunnels from underneath the tank? I know on your make-do stand you said you had an opening in it just for that reason.

Those shells to a pistol shrimp are like marble staircases, granite countertops, tile floors, crown moldings and large roman tubs are to people. :D

Mine tends to steal hermits and snails. I have even seen him take my strombus and stuff him into the side of his burrow. It was quite humorous to see the strombus have to climb out.

I just put some LR rubble and empty shells right in front of the burrow, and now its all filled with sand and messed up. Wonder if he moved? Do you have any other stocking plans?

Henry, My pistol has one main entrance that's between some rocks. The other entrances change all the time. With some building materials now available yours is probably busy expanding it's lair. Other tan a few more corals there are no other stocking plans

Wareagle, The pistol kept a thin layer of sand on the glass. From underneath I couldn't see anything except for an occasional bare spot, but those got covered up quickly.

Well, the burrow is the same, but he move the entrance over .5" so now its right next to the glass, and I can see pretty far into it. I like looking at it with a flash light at night. He can defiantly sense light though, as he will retreat back into the burrow even if my goby isnt there to warn them. This just might be my weird goby, but during the day my goby is out and doesnt really watch the burrow, and the pistol blocks the entrance with whatever is around, is this normal?
