Cuting the brace on my 65g

Hi all here is my problem. I recieved my MH light fixture today and set it up only to find that the middle brace (plastic) on my 65g all glass megaflow aquarium casts a horrible shadow. Does anyone know how or if i can cut this piece out. Any help/ suggestions are greatly appreciated.

You would probably be ok if you cut it out but I am the type to loose sleep over it.

Do not do that, that holds the front and back of the tank together. If you cut that piece out your tank will bow out front to back and will break the reason i know this is i had a 55 and the brace in the center broke and the tank did the bow. BAD VERY BAD

DO NOT cut it out!!! I had a 65 freshwater tank burst a year ago because I cut it out!!! It took about three years to burst after I cut the brace and it bowed a ton inbetween! DO NOT DO IT!!! it was a huge disaster!

OK, Slow down for a second or 2. There should be a relatively easy solution. The brace adds structural stability, Correct? So if you were to get a couple of pieces of clear acylic and secure them to the sides of the aquarium (secure) by drilling or glueing. Then you should be able to alleviate the shadows or at least disapate them and still maintain structural security. It will take some planning, but I think it can be done. If the tank is full of water currently, make sure that you install the new pieces before cuttting out the existing piece.

The tank probably needs two MH bulbs for reasonably uniform lighting, so I'd live with the situation as is until that's possible. I wouldn't cut the tank, in any case, personally.

I would not cut it as the other have said! There is a reason for them to put a brace there. I would put a reflector that holds 2 MH if you are a DIYer or get a premade lighting with dual lights in it!
Don't listen to people that tell you to cut it, it will be your house that eventually gets flooded! I have seen others do this mistake and end up regretting it!

65 gallons is a lot of water. Unless you are certain of your acryllic skills I wouldn't mess with it. It can be done, but make certain you do it right.

They used to put more bracing in the upper frame in tanks. I guess they found out it was easier, safer, and cheaper to do it with a center brace. If you're gonna' cut it off make sure you have a few spare buckets and a mop or two!

right on the aga site it says do not cut out the center brace. u could cut it out and leave 1 inch on each side. then get some acrylic and plastic screws and replace it with that.

Do not do it. It may hold for awhile but, once it goes thats it. I've seen it happen. It's real ugly.

Do you want to fill your tank with all the Livestock that you love only to have it hit the floor?

thank you for all the replies. The tank is currently full and im switching to reef tank. Just got my light in today and i never thought about the shadow problem.

So no shadow?

sorry i do still have the shadow and it is annoying. I dont think that ill cut it out. I like the ideal of using mirrors. ????

There is an old thread that details how to replace the center brace with clear acrylic to allow the light through. You can do a search for that if you like.

I also have a 65g AGA with the center brace and considered trying to replace it, but I am a chicken and opted to use two MH bulbs instead. Since I am moving the tank towards more SPS corals it is working out great. I agree with bertoni, I would work with the one bulb for now and plan to add a second bulb when possible.
