Cutting and glueing pvc for the first time :(

I have a question about cutting and glueing PVC.

When i cut a pipe, how much should i add to the lenght to compensate for the pipe going deeper into the fitting when it has glue on it ? I think i read somewhere it was 1/4 inch. Is that right? I have to glue a coupling on one side and a 90 degree on the other.
So does that mean that the total lenght of this pipe and fittings would be 1/2 inch shorter than when i test the pipes and fittings before glueing ?

Look inside any fitting and you will see a ledge that the pipe stops against when inserted in the fitting. Measure the depth of the ledge into the fitting - that is the "extra" length you need.

The fittings will also add some overall length. I usually cut pipe slightly longer than what I measure, dry fit the fittings on and make adjustments. I also recommend removing the sharp edges on newly cut pvc with some type of sanding. This will help avoid all the glue being pushed into the fitiing. Another thing to do is give the fitting a twist before the glue dries to help spread the glue around. MAny of these things are unecessary if the pipe will not be pressurized.
