Cuttlefish Mating at Virginia Aquarium

Was visiting the Virginia Aquarium and saw that the one cuttlefish (presumably the female) appeared to be flashing. Shortly thereafter the male then proceeded to continue the mating ritual. My understanding, though I could be wrong, is the male deposits sperm into the females mouth where she then deposits over eggs she’s laid. I did not see where the eggs were. I apologize if my terminology isn’t correct as I’ve never owned or researched this before.

Watch some you-tube videos. Lots of them and lots of information. Where there rival males? He often guards the female while she is depositing her eggs. He will attempt to wash out any rivals sperm and continue the mating process. By doing that, he is attempting to have his be the only available sperm. Females can store and choose which sperm to use and when. Mr. Big usually gets the call but "sleeper" males are often successful in copulating by displaying female colors,patterns, and behavior to conceal his clandestine intentions. Cephalopods are highly technical creatures. You are blessed to have been able to witness the act.
