cyano and chaeto

sorry if this is the wrong forum considering cyano isn't really an algae

I have a rather weird potential problem.

My tank is roughtly 3 months old stocked with 5 damsels a a tang and so on....basically it is not a nutriet factory.

For my returns i have dual return that separate into 2 directional nozels on each of the 2 main return lines.

The strange thing is that 1 of the 4 directional nozels have a small amount of cyano growing on it. I dont have cyano growing anywhere else in thank except for the nozel, a small ledge on the same return line and on one of my overflows.

so long question short, what the heck is going on?

I'm just going to wait it out to see if it starves itself out. The weird thing is that my nitrates are 0 ppm which is what made be believe that it was something else

but its maroon red and slightly slimey, so it seems pretty obvious that its cyano

secondly,

I have a ball of chaeto in my main tank. I'm in the process of building a sump with a refuge in it so i can place the chaeto in it.

At least a few times a week i see my longspine urchin atop the chaeto and im concerned that its munching on the chaeto. I've never heard of anything eating chaeto so i guessed its eating something in the chaeto.

Any thoughts?

I have the same problem with the algea in my overflow boxes. About a week after I clean the tank I have a good amount of the red slimy algea in them. It seems to only like really high flowing areas. I dont think its Cyano because I dont have it any where else or maybe I do but the tangs eat it.

I wouldn't worry about it if it's just one small area. It will either starve off like you said, or maybe it likes the location because of good lighting, flow, etc. I think as long as it isn't spreading, don't sweat it.

I don't know whether the urchin will eat the chaeto or not. Are there noticable chunks missing after he's on it? If not, probably no harm done.

it's actually kind of cool if you see the urching pointed toward the glass while it's eating the chaeto. You really get to see the aristotle lantern in action. I also have a larger turbo that will eat chaeto like sucking spaghetti.
