Cyano Outbreak

Fellow LIRA Folks...

Cyano Bacteria is kicking my butt right now.. My NO3 and PO4 test result come back reading 0.. My guess is that it is something organic that's causing it. I had a newly introduced Tomato clown that did not do well.. Before I was able to get him out, sadly the fish perished in the tank and I could not find the fish. I'm assuming this caused a spike in my organic NO3 and PO4 readings which caused the outbreak. I did a 44 gallon water change and there seams to be no real change. I dose vodka, so I'm considering stopping the vodka dosing and ramp up on MB7 for a while....

I also started to make another 44 gallons of fresh saltwater.. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

Hey Jonathan,
I have the same issue for sometime already.. I stoped carbon source but still have cyano on my sand bad and rocks. did quite few w/c and nothing helped, yet.
I do have high ( i would say) PO4-0.07 , so i start some GFO to get it down.. will see

Hey Mike, Happy New Year Bro! I was eyeing my Phosban container today.. Let me know how it works out for you..

Check your make up water, make sure your tds is 0. Do you use both RO and DI?
I had my tds creep up for a couple of weeks before noticing, that’s when the cyno started. I now use two DI canisters inline so when the first changes color I change it. Obviously the second makes sure tds is always 0.
Frozen food can also add nutrients, rinsing takes care of that.
Lots of hermits can help.

Good luck.

Jonathan,
Two words, Special Blend.
Bacteria additive that Joe Berger actually told me about 5-6 years ago. It takes about 5 weeks to get it under control but works without chemicals.

Happy New Year !:)
I definately let you know. I might try Special blend as Warren recomended.

Warren , have you try this personally?

Hi Mike,
Yes I have.
I use it frequently in my office tank because I do not perform water changes in that tank. It's been 4 years now and only that product will keep the cyno at bay.
I also occasionally use it at home on my fowlr tank when I see signs of cyno breaking out due to the nutrients.

It works :)
Just need to give it time. If you have very low nutrient levels, you might only need to treat for the 1 cycle which is about 5 weeks. If you have moderate levels, then you might want to stay on the maintenance dosage until you get your levels down. I used this on my SPS tank a few times also. I buy this product by the case

I have a small but annoying and recurring problem with cyano and would like to try Special Blend.
Do any local stores cary it, or is it only available online?

I saw the product line in Petco recently. If you want it locally, they will have it but be prepared to pay about $13 for an 8.5 oz bottle vs online pricing.

I just picked up a bottle at Petco $18 for the 16oz bottle.
I never tried this stuff before but I've had a cyno problem since using Intorceptor a few months ago. If Joe and other members say it works I am willing to give it a try. Let you know how I make out.

Thanks!
Walter

The last time I had a cyano problem, someone suggested I run the tank with the lights out for 3 days. It cleared it right up, but I only had a fairly small outbreak.

Hey Jonathan, Happy New Year, sorry to hear about the problem. I have been battling it for about 6-8 months. Not too aggresively, but keeping it in check. It did engulf everything in my tank at one point. I haven't lost anything, but a few corals are not too happy. The odd thing is that I have NONE in my fowlr that is hooked to the same system?! I assume you are using a Phos Photometer to check your phosphates? I was so disgusted with the garbage test kits that always read 0 so I finally bought one to battle this problem. My phos were .06 two weeks ago and I tested today at .04...after the 100 gallons ow crap I siphoned out and changed. I'm sure my old bulbs aren't helping, but I'll have new bulbs in 2 weeks and renew my battle!

My plan is a massive water change of at least 75% and start dosing Brightwells. If that doesn't work, I'm glad I saw about this special blend stuff, I'll be next in line for it!

Good luck and keep us posted.

Taz

Don't forget to turn off any UV sterilizer or ozone for the initial 48-72 hours when dosing or you are wasting the additive and shake well, then take a sniff. You wil not be disappointed.

Started the Special Blend cycle last night. Let you know how it goes.
I can confirm 100% that it will get rid of the inlaws! Directions: Step 1 - Open bottle in the same room that your inlaws are sitting in. Step 2 - Wait 2 minutes then open front door. If inlaws or any unwanted folks are still in the room repeat step 1.

Wow does that stuff stink!

Thanks,
Walter

Thanks for all your help everyone... pecan, I actually used Special Blend to help cycle my tank... Boy does that stuff stink! I was LMAO at Walter's post. It will certainly fumigate your house! But, if it works, I'm in.. I dose MB7 daily, but SB may be stronger and in my case, it may work due to having a different bacterial strainnthan what I am adding now... I will give it a shot.
