Cyano Outbreak

Well I didn't dose my tank yet, but I did my brothers. You guys are correct that is one nasty smell. I'm not sure if the smell was still in the house or just stuck in my nose 2 hrs later. Anyway, I thought you'd enjoy this picture of his BRAND NEW filtersock after only 24 hrs! Unbelievable!

I will try to get to my tank this weekend, can't wait.

Question, Do any of you have fuges? Will this affect a refugium? I don't think so, but it doesn't hurt to check.

Wow.. That's the same effect I had when checking my sock 24 hours after my first dose.. There's nothing to worry about when it comes to your refugium that I know of. However, others with more experience like Joe or Warren may be able to chime in.. I don't run a refugium on my current tank..

Gonna dose SB later today first time. I have run prodibio for past 18 months. Thinking I should I skip it while dosing the SB to prevent a bac bloom. What do you think?

Hey Cato, personally, I would'nt dose any other bacteria sources while using SB.. It may be overdoing it.. Your tank has me drooling everytime I visit your page so, I know you are taking all precautions... :lol: I don't blame you!

I've already made 2 doses, 3rd will be on Sunday and I can't see any noticeable difference. Hoping that something will change soon. I am reading that it may take up to 5 weeks but after reading through this thread I was hoping to see earlier signs.

Everyone's system is different... I guess some will take longer to see the effect. If you haven't done so already, I wouldn't wait to start stirring up your sand and vacuming out what you see. That helps.. I would only do a section at a time and as Warren stated in an earlier response to me, give it at least 72 hours after dosing SB to do so in order to give the bacteria a chance to settle.. Keep the faith

Looking good, I haven't told him I'm dosing his tank! He is happy though. I work on it daily while I watch my niece. Second dose was supposed to be today, but I didn't get there due to the snow. It will probably be Fri. I hope this doesn't affect treatment. In the meantime, I cleaned mine up today, did a wc and dosed my first dose. The kids were going nuts over the smell....LOL. Surprised the wife hasn't said anything yet. I dosed in the tank and can smell it in the basement as well as the main floor :hmm3:

I did my first dose three days ago and the little bit of brown that I had on the sand has grown and turned an almost copper color. Much darker and larger than before. Hope this goes away sooner than later.

Hey Gary, to be honest.. The Cyano in my tank got darker and thicker initially as well after my first dose. Within 24 hours it began to lift off the sandbed.. The areas that I could not reach turned from red to a brown color and eventually disappeared over the last few weeks.

Thanks, I was hoping for something like that. Did you continue to dose vodka also and how about mb7?

I have maintained the vodka and cut back to just a few drops of mb7. Didn't want to stop completely.

I actually changed over to vinegar with one part vodka a week into the battle. As I read through some posts, many experienced reefers cited that they experienced far less cyano with vinegar or VSV veresus Vodka alone. In addition, I also replaced my ozone generator which was not working (unknown to me). Together with SB and water changes, I am ecstatic with the results. I will be posting pictures that I took last night later today. The before and afters are insane.

As for MB7, I don't think I'm going back for a while. I prefer the Maintenance dosing schedule of SB.

Ok.. Here are some updated pics from last night. You can compare them with earlier pics in the thread that were horrendous with the red carpet everywhere... I tried to take shots from the angles where the Cyano was the worse. The 5th dose of SB goes in tonight and then it's maintenance from then on out. I'm a believer!
