Um.... Anybody know that Spirulina is, technically, a cyanobacteria? I think we get contamination from food.
I don't use SB. After all the disasters I've endured from additives over the years, I'm not likely to try it. I have a little cyano that is easily controlled by siphoning. Comes back in a month or so.
The one tank I have that NEVER gets it has fish that NEVER eat Spirulina flakes. I'm just saying....

Sorry to hear that Bro.. Since starting this thread, I've had pretty good success with SB. Since starting this thread, I also went from dry to wet skimming and that definitely made a noticeable difference for me on the positive side. Also, how is your NO3 these days.. I believe you mentioned that it spiked a while back.. If it's still high, I would do a series of large water changes just to naturally get it under control, then start from there. Good luck and make sure to come bounce questions or ideas off the folks in this thread..

Very interesting, but at one point, there was no Spirulina in the food that I was feeding and my cyano was at it's worst back then.. My guess is that in the end, unless we find a bacterial strain that will consistently out-compete it, we will have to deal with it from time to time.

Hmm..... Interesting Jonathan. Now that I think about it, that tank is also fully covered, so maybe it just falls from the sky? Hey, there's a ton of bacteria everywhere so why not? My cyano-free tank is not only fully covered, but it's also under another tank.
Another thing I'd like to share. I used to get it worst in the highest flow spots. Then, I got a sleeper goby to keep the "tunnels" clear under the rocks. He/she (it?) eats it off the sand bed, rocks, and glass. Since I got the goby, the cyano is almost entirely gone. Maybe that's a natural food for them? Anyone else ever see that?

Hehehe- Tangs are funny that way. My tang doesn't touch it. Also, my hermits will jump off the rock like they're committing suicide to avoid it. Even the snails crawl around it, including the Nassarius. Must be the particular kind of bacteria. I've seen other tanks where the hermits gobble it up. I had a 3-line cleaner shrimp once that used to pick at it, but I think he was digging for critters that lived inside.

I have some LPS. As you know, LPS like nutrients and you have to find that balance when it comes to taking care of both, LPS and SPS.. My guess, is that as long as you are not going heavy on carbon dosing or some other means to achieve a nutrient baron system, your LPS will be fine.

just out of curiosity if youve experienced cyno on your sand are you using sugar grain size or other grain sizes

Did you guys turn your lights off for 24 to 72 hours after dosing the SB?
I didn't find it necessary. Just syphon up what you can...or stir it up...and use a net to capture as much as you can....then stay on top of the water changes and eventually it will go away.
