Cyano turning bright orange

Hey everyone :). First of all I'm not concerned about this, I just witnessed this happening in my tank this evening and was wondering if some of you algae experts could tell me what is happening :). I don't think cyano is technically algae actually but hopefully this forum is the right place.

In my 55gallon FOWL there is a fair amount of cyano bacteria covering the rocks. I'm not looking to get rid of it I think it gives a nice effect. I recently had to remove the sump from the system, so tonight was the first time I've ever had to add top off water straight to the tank.

I tipped a glass of fresh RO in, then had a glance at the tank and was like 'woah!! how did my rocks turn bright orange?!?!' It was like they were litterally glowing with this flourescent orange algae. It was only the rocks at the top of the tank that would have been in direct contact with the top off water being added. I watched for 30 seconds as the orange immediately started to fade back to the dark purple of the cyano. I tried adding a few more glasses of RO water and watched carefully as the cyano lit up like a christmas tree everytime it came into contact with the fresh water for just a split second.

Does anyone know why this happened? I had never heard of it before and was just wondering if it was some sort of chemical reaction or something.
Would love to hear your thoughts :)

Thanks very much,
Casey.
