cyano

I think that's its name...a red dusting or carpet looking area cropping up on my sandbed.
Please help me remember the causes and cures for this.
Thanks

not exactly sure of the cause. But chemi-clean worked twice for me. 2 different setups. When I first setup my 20 and 10 gal. I had it bad and one treatment of chemi clean cleared it up in both tanks and it never came back.

I tried to remove it or stir the sand...it came back.

Is it due to low flow? it seems to be mostly in the corner where flow is not directed.

I may have to try the chemi-clean

thanks

kev, maybe we can meet up sometime and I'll let you have some of mine. I have to make sure I can find it. I only used one dose I believe. The first time I had it, c_stowers gave me some. I ordered some when I had it in the 10.

I had it everywhere in both my tanks but was told it was because they was just setup and that it probably would have went away on it's own but I didn't feel like waiting.

Increase flow and make sure params are in check. Increasing SG slightly and keeping PH up also have an effect on cyano I believe.

How old is your tank? When my tank was about 5-6 months old I had it and it took several weeks to overcome without any chemical treatment.

I'd just deal with it for now by manual removal and suction and increased flow. Cyano hates flow and to be disturbed. Run carbon too. :) Give it a month.
