Cyanobacteria in Refugium

Hello,

Just starting a 72 gallon tank from J and have been cycling for 4-weeks. The main tank is great, though the refugium is full of cyanobacteria. Is this a huge problem? Does anyone have any insight?

Have a great night,

Vince

I've seen a bunch of tanks go through this when they were set up. As long as you're proactive about keeping nutrients out it should be a short cycle. Just makes sure you're running DI and carbon. :)

Turn the light off in the fuge. IMO if you are just cycling your tank there is no need to have the fuge up and running. It is an easy fix if you want to get rid of it.

Ade brings up a good point. If the tank is cycling, theres no need for light. During the cycling process, nutrients are released into the water. The nutrients are food for either bacteria or algae. Algae (and cyanobacteria) need light to grow. Without light, you tip the balance to more bacterial growth
