Cycle Question

Hi Guys!

I am back after an 8 year hiatus. Set up an 80g with 40g sump.

4 weeks into cycle, after having major spikes of everything I am now at zero for ammonia, nitrate, and nitrate.

I did not cycle with any live rock (all dry), but I did use "œlive sand." I also dosed with a low amount of Dr. Tim's. I did not use ammonia or ghost feeding.

Anyway, looking for suggestions: I know it is recommended to do a water change, but is there any reason when all my numbers are zero? Would a water change cause another spike?

Would you suggest that I am ready for Fish?

I know this is a beginner question that gets asked frequently, but it Seemed a bit unique!

Welcome back w1dude!

If you haven't provided an ammonia source, you have not cycled. You likely have only a small amount of beneficial bacteria established. It needs to be fed. If you had cycled you should have some measurable amount of Nitrate at this point.

I would not add fish yet. I would add ammonia and start a true cycle. Once Ammonia and Nitrite have dropped off, then it is ready.

My Nitrates have gone down, but they were through the roof a week ago. You think this was just a mini cycle and not significant?

That would be my guess. If you haven't started with adding an ammonia source, you've skipped step one of the cycling process.
