Cycling with or without light?

I've seen videos that say both. From y'all when I cycle my tank with dry rock do I have lights on or off?????

I don't know if it matters much either way, I did lights off, it may keep you from trying to mess around with the tank while it's cycling if the lights are off.

If your lights are on, they will promote the growth of the diatomaceous once the cycle is complete which will indicate when your cycle is getting towards the end

I hate to break this news to you, but you're going to have algae no matter what for about the first 6 months. It's just part of the process unfortunately.

Yup, definitely lights on. Get the algae going ASAP. You WILL get algae of some kind at some point. I'd rather encourage it earlier then later. Id even go as far as running the lights longer then you would with fish and corals. This way you can really get the algae growing, and take care of it while nothing is in there and prettiness isn't necessarily concern number 1.

Nitrifying bacteria doesn't need light to form or multiply. You will get algae with or without a skimmer. There are techniques/DIY algae scrubbers that will cut down on unwanted algae in the display tank though

Bs full bs, best thing is over light and let it eat its own nutrients..no input of feed. Will stabilize faster a high lightning, even 24 hours, it will eat it self clean of nutrients..these guys don't know ****...

Algae will grow no matter what like previously stated
