I hate to break this news to you, but you're going to have algae no matter what for about the first 6 months. It's just part of the process unfortunately.Does it cause bad algae in the process cause I don't have a protein skimmer yet

I do lights on to get the ugly phases started. I like to think the earlier that starts the sooner it's over
Correct..Yup, definitely lights on. Get the algae going ASAP. You WILL get algae of some kind at some point. I'd rather encourage it earlier then later. Id even go as far as running the lights longer then you would with fish and corals. This way you can really get the algae growing, and take care of it while nothing is in there and prettiness isn't necessarily concern number 1.
