This is why I think testing for numbers is a futile practice.

Whats happening is that you indeed have an excess of nutrients that is fueling the growth. The reason the test kits aren't picking it up is the cyano is taking it out of the water column.

A few questions being answered will help find the cuprit:
1: How old is the system
2: What is your bioload
3: How much/what do you feed
4: What is your skimmer size/brand
5: What are you using for lights, and what is your light cycle?
6: Are you running any GFO? If so, how much and how often is it changed?

Sometimes you'll see seasonal cyano issues. Now that the days are getting longer, is your tank getting some extra natural light? Something like closing the blinds while you're at work would help that.

Also, what's the low end of your phos test? The cheap API ones only read down to .25ppm, which is still way high. So untraceable can still be too much.

Lots of people find that tweaking their flow helps, 40x DT volume with no dead spots is a good starting point. Also skimming wetter seems to help. Most people beat it by making a few little tweaks, another option is a 3-day lights out with wet skimming and manual removal.

The tank has been running 13 months total. 4x2x2. Skimmer is a tmc v2 400.. I think, ill double check this eve. And do a phos test (salifert kit) lights are a pair of sanrise led wifi units. And come on at 10% at 9am and worl up to 70% at 4 pm and tail off at 9pm.

Flow is
-1000 lph return.
-1 x 8000 lph powerhead on random.
-1 x 4000 lph powerhead on random.
- 1500 lph powerhead

I run about 20g of phosban and 250g carbon.

Feeding wise i feel a large pinch of pellets on auto in the morning, then either 1 or 2 blocks of mysis in the pm and sometimes put in a new era grazing block.

Stock :

-Vampire tang
-Yellow tang
-Fox face rabbit fish
-5 blue chromis
- 1 cleaner wrasse
-1 fire fish
-1 bargai cardinal
-1 mandarin
-1 red spot blenny
Several crabs/snails and a fire shrimp.

Skimmer is running fairly wet. Pulls a nice green cup every 5 days. 10% water change weekly. And carbon/phosbam changed weekly /bi weekly

Also dose tropic marin balling salts abc at 2 ml every other day, salifert coral food and reef roids weekly.

Did try a 2 day lights out with tank covered. But didn't manually the algae.

Cheers

I have had a similar issue the last few weeks and I did a 3 day lights out and covered the tank with towels completely so it was 100% dark. After the full 72 hours, 95% of the cyano was gone and then I just brushed that one little section remaining off with a toothbrush. Over the last 1.5 weeks it has not returned. My issue is that the tank has received extra sunlight starting in the beginning of April. I think it is critical you identify the source which is obviously sometimes easier said than done. Good Luck!

Lights out will do it for sure...I am battling Cyano right now and have done the lights out before my corals do not like the lights out approach though so I vacuum the sand and have reduced the photo period of the tank. One thing that was strange to find but totally makes sense was growing the Cyano on my algae turf scrubber has really cut down on the cyano in the DT.

My opinion is lights out for 3-7 days is guaranteed to work.
Running your light for less time each day and vacuuming the cyano up will also defeat it, it only takes longer.
The ATS is a pretty new thing for me so I don't know how this will turn out yet.

If you want a quick fix then dose chemiclean. It will get rid of it but I'd recommend just sticking it out. Most tanks see some cyano about this time of year including my tanks
