I went to LFS and braught a sample of what is on my liverock .It's dark green and can blow it off subtrate and live rock with turkey baster. He tried to sell me Red Slime remover by Ultralife Reef Products . I ? him and said Why does it say red slime remover What I'm trying to get rid of is green. He said cyno can be green or all colors. So Is he correct ? Lots of bubles clear bubles atatched to this stuff. He sais it show up where flow is not good. Trying to redirect power heads . This hasn't worked ar all and it's getting worse weekly. $18.99 pluss tax treats 300 gallons not cheap.

I think he's right. I've seen it green. It's a nutrient issue, Maybe high nitrates, phosphates, or low flow. And you're right, red slime algae remover is NOT cheap. Try correcting one of the issues mentioned above. It's always best to try to fix the problem without chemicals if possible. Your livestock will thank you.
 
Yes i keep getting the smae answers as far as nutrients only feed every 3 days sparingly 5 gal water change bi weekly tests show no nitrates . I keep changing flow direction . I'm gpoing to keep plugging at it. Will cyno finaly sycle out ?

Yes. Once you get it's "food" ( nutrients) under control. Also, if you changed your lights recently, that could affect it as well. The new spectrum combined with nutrients can cause a bloom. The same thing just occurred on one of my clients tanks.
 
i changed lights I think in july I'm also moving 250 GPH with a filstar renacal canister ans two 106 gph power heads . i just can't beat this I have tried everything except boiling my rock and thats out of the ? would lose all my mushrooms ect ect. How long can i shut light off before it affects my muushrooms finger leather a cabbage leather green nymthia some button polyps some zoos and two ricordia clams ?

Well I cleaned my canister and that increased flow Thats it just going to let it run . Like my daughter said leave it alone. Thats the only thing I haven't done so thats what I'm going to do feed and change water !

Moving my powerheads towards the bottom center helped my cyno go away. More flow wouldnt let it rest on my sandbed.
 
Rust (brownish) color is more like a diatom bloom and it shoud go away on its own. This happens to new setups. It's a phase and as long as you do your maintenance it will help it go away faster.
 
The canister could be contributing to the problem. Your flow may be another issue.

2 106gph powerheads is not nearly enough flow for anything but the smallest of nano tanks. What size is your tank??

Do you use 0 TDI RO/DI water for top off? Where do you get your saltwater that you do waterchanges with?

How much liverock do you have? Do you have a good skimmer?? Whats your bio-load?? What kind of food do you feed? Have you checked for phosphates??

Lots of questions need to know more specifics.......

my advice personally and perhaps its just me would be to confirm the id firstly, post up a pic, however ronny from what i remember we did see some a few weeks back and if i remember it was cyano, i think we gave you some advice about it then, i will see if i can find the original thread and see what we recommended, i think the water keeper and capn-hyliner did suggest a few tricks to beat it and red slime remover wouldnt be 1 of them
 
Ya Micheal to answer all of above RO/DI make my own water . How bi of power head do I need not much room with skimmer canister intake return and intake heater . Well working on it just don't want to tear tank down would kill all my corals glued to rock and mushrooms.

well water movement alone wont help, but id suggest about 600-700 gallons per hour through the tank, allowing for the volume with the sump volume, a couple of decent phs is fine in a 25,your skimmer hasnt been going very long has it, perhaps it will get better once its bedded in a bit as well, cant find the link, i know its on here somewhere, will post up the capns and waterkeepers opinions on your problem when i find it though, stick with it man, you will get there
 
Hey Ronny,
It sounds like, by the GPH, that you may have two maxi-jet 400's for powerheads. I don't think it's your lights because you've had them since July. IME, Cyano is usually more than just one thing, It always seems to be a combination of things. Just stay strong and go through the checklist of things that cause it and fix each independently. You could also siphon as much as possible during water changes. You'll beat it!

First, use a fine net, turkey baster, or siphon and remove all the green slime that you can. Then, turn your lights off for three days (all the time don't cheat here). On day four turn the lights on, do a 30% water change, turn the lights back off. On day five go back to regular lighting.

This has worked for me in the past. You shouldn't really use red slime remover in a tank under @70 gallons.

I have been fighting this also. I would do the the 3 days no lights things would clear up, then return. I have a very good LFS owner here and we have chatted several times about this and what the root cause was. Nutrients seem to be the cause however, the light encourages the growth. Yes flow helps. So after we went step by step throught my system as to what the cause was there did not seem to be any system breakdown causing the nutrients. Then we got on the food. Along with various things I feed I do use frozen Mysis and the frozen Multi Pack cubes. Here is where mine was coming from.
1. The frozen Mysis have a lot of oil in them. I was not rinsing the cubes down. The oil in the tank was an un eaten nutrient. So I began rinsing in a net before feeding.
2. The frozen cubes are held together with gel. I was letting them competely melt before adding to tank. Thus leaving mostly liquid again un eaten nutrients. So I do not completely melt down now.
I did the 3 days lights out. Cleaned the tank like always on Saturday morning blowing the rockes off. The cyno has been gone. My parameters during this were always good so skip the test find your root cause. It took me 6+ months to figure mine out so run through your system and your habbits. Most probelms like mine are self induced. Like said above complete darkeness no food for 3 days will kill it but if the the cause is still happening it will return. Good Luck
On a second note if $18.99 is to much this may not be the correct hobby. Red Slime will work however, if the source of the nutrient continues it may come back.
 
Heres what I do . I change water every 2 weeks use RO/DI Have new bulbs last luly Have two maxi jet 400's and a rena cal filter if I had any more flow would blow every thing over. I feed little flake food every 3 days lights on 135 watt 8 hrs . Only have small clown small schromis 2 small damsels. Came home tonight tank looks much worse cyno just spreading. I've sucked it off rock scrubed it with tooth brush Just comes back worse. I just don't know what to do. I realy don't want to use a chemical to get rid of it.
