cynobacteria...

More flow helps in some cases. Reducing feeding might be appropriate. Also, better skimming or growing and harvesting a macroalga might help starve it. What is your setup like?

Cyano can deceive you. You test your water and all is well, but the cyano is using the nutrients up as fast as they are made meanwhile growing like mad. bertoni has the right ideas.

dunt tadda dum..... Chemi-clean to the rescue. That is if all else fails but that stuff worked great for me.

tangov559,
That does sound like a fine setup. I would watch my feeding of the critters. If more nutrients are going in than coming out that can cause problems. Also do you use RO/DI water. Using it may help the problem as well.

You could also consider getting a couple more powerheads.

yes i use ro water...i feed twice aweek...flake only...i mite need chem clean??what u guys think? tank up bout a year

Hummmm, I hate to use chemicals. It seems to me that something else is causing this. If your only feeding twice a week, (that is probably not enough) than more than likely is not the culprit,(overfeeding that is) I would have to lean toward flow or Phosphate buildup from the flake food. Especially considering that the tank has been up 1 year. How much coralline algae do you have in the tank??

Pat

go with the chem clean. I do hate to use chemicals as well but I've never had a bad experience with it and if you've got corals the cyno will be more harmful to them than the chem clean will be. But, chem clean isn't going to solve your problem only treat it. Somehow, you've got too much nutrients in your water. Did you stock too quickly? Everyone does it. Do you turn off your system when you feed so the flakes don't get sucked into rock or filter? There could be a lot of reasons for something like this happening which are completely out of your control. Water changes, carbon should get you over the hump. Also, think about a bigger protein skimmer if the problem persists over the next couple of months.

The 1100 will produce a lot of flow, but not outside the usual guidelines. What kinds of corals do you want to keep?

If you have cyano than chances are you have a phosphate issue. Water flow will not directly impact your cyano .. however water flow will help keep crud that generates nitrates/phosphates suspended so it can be filtered/skimmed out of the tank. Your overall goal is to export more phosphates than your importing into the tank.

i only have zoos.. a couple only.. so i should try chem clean...ill mite do a water change later on too.. just i case..

How often do you do water changes? By your last statement it appears to me that you may not do too many. You need to change at least 15 to 20 % of the water per month. That works out to about 2.75 gallons per week at 20 %. If you do not do enough water changes, couple with not enough flow and nutrient build up, (how much stuff does your skimmer take out.) I see a cyno factory happening.

I think a Seio 1100 would be sweet for that tank as Jonathan spoke to.

It seems to me there are several issues at work here. You may have to address the isssue on several fronts.

dont do more water changes, dont do light changes. i battled cyano with those cures for ages... and in 3 days chemiclean cleaned out my cyano, and didnt come back. make sure u follow its directions though. BEST STUFF EVER, .... boyds chemi-clean

YOU WONT GO WRONG!

Hey I am with Super. I know that there are alot of fishheads that are down on adding chemicals to there tanks and I agree to some point but Chemclean is an awesome product. I too had the cyno problem and held off for 3 months doing all the h2o changes and the carbon and the vacuming yada yada yada to no avail. Finally caved in and dosed chemclean and 2 days later no cyno, that simple. Just make sure you do 25% h2o change after dosing and run carbon bags after also. I never used the airstone and turn you skimmer off during treatment as it will go crazy if you don't.
