D.i.y. Maxi-jet Mods Are Worth It!!

As far as I understand the mod includes a stopper on the shroud that when the pump starts in reverse, the prop will move forward and get to the stopper that will stop the prop and force it to turn in the opposite direction. If this is so then the mod should work on a wave maker with no problem.

I'm doing your linking work for you ;) lol

Seems i missed one: If your MJ shoots water out the inlet slits and not the front opening then you forgot
to put the stopper in .

Because the maxi jet runs on alternating current (AC) power it can spin both left or right and will do so randomly
when you first plug it in. if it starts going the right way then perfect but half the time it will start going the wrong
way and end up sucking water in the front and blowing it out the fins on the side. This is where the stopper
comes in. the stopper is simply a piece of acrylic rod shoved through the side of the housing. I drill a 3/16” hole
about a 1/8” below the top of the housing (just under the cap) and glue a ½”-1" piece of 3/16” acrylic rod. What
happens when the pump starts the wrong way is it pushes the whole impeller up towards the cap when this
happens the prop will slam into the stopper (acrylic bar) and bounce back the other way and start running in the
right direction. This is extremely easy to implement and works very well. Some people have found with the
octura props that you don’t need a stopper because the ends of the prop extend up and actually slam into the
centering cap itself. I personally always use the stopper bar because it works so well , costs almost nothing and
takes about 20 seconds to install . Mother always said “if it an’t broke don’t fix it” : )

OK, so if it's starts spining the wrong way, the force of the prop pulls the whole magnet assembly out of the motor housing... Still I would think that constant use on a wave maker (and thus the prop constantly hitting the stopper) would cause a lot of wear and tear on the prop.

How long have you had your mod done akrimmel? Do you have it on a wavemaker? If so, how is the prop holding up to the "stopper hits" ?

yea I actually did that mod on mine, and planned on buying a wavemaker, but never got around to the wavemaker part, so its kind of a pain in the *** to get them to blow in the right direction now, hah. so I was wondering does this mod actually make it put out any extra flow or is it just for direction change?

Ouch, ~$60 per PH on that site, but they look very professional.

zrs6v4 - To which mod do you refer? If your talking about Melev's mod (also the one I did), It does increase the flow of the PW. By cutting off the "exhaust" tube and drilling some holes in the base plate, you "free up" the pump to push more water.

I have 4 x MJ1200's on a RedSea Wavemaster Pro. I modded all 4 of them with Melev's Mod and I'm very happy with the results. However, I also own 2 x Tunze 6000 stream pumps on the Tunze wave controller... I have all of these PH's running in a 120 gal display... And no, it's not a whirlpool display.

i had mentioned it is like a whirlpool, but what i was trying to get across is that there is no deadspots now just like in a whirlpool as to before i had a lot of dead spots.
