D5000 photo help

I've got a D5000 camera and I can't seem to get decent photos of my tank. When I try setting the White Balance and I always get a message from the camera saying that it was unable to set the White Balance and to try again. I read one post where someone said to shoot in RAW mode. These are the camera choices:

"¢ NEF (RAW) + JPEG Fine
"¢ NEF (RAW) + JPEG Normal
"¢ NEF (RAW) + JPEG Basic
"¢ NEF (RAW)
"¢ JPEG Fine
"¢ JPEG Normal
"¢ JPEG Basic

Which should I pick? Can anyone give me some advise?

Use NEF (RAW) Shoot this way then adjust white balance in post processing.
