D700 Question

Well considering Vr if the question was initially if VR would work Yes it will work on all digital cameras and even on older film cameras as it's built in the lens.
Considering lenses Nikon is very famous in that all their older lenseswork on newer bodies. and they somehow kept this tradition going with only an exception for lenses without a built in focus motor that can't focus on their D40, X and 60...
Now the choice between a D300 and 700 is a very tight one. Both are great bodies the 700 could be better however it is still a bit early to decide on which body to go.
Maybe you should wait a bit to see the next realeases of Nikon in Non pro bodies. The fact that they released a non pro full frame body is a bit confusing: Was it just an answer to a Canon body? is it the new trend now? only waiting for the new releases will give the answer.
Another very important factor to consider is the type of shooting you do most. a full sensor body like the D700 does not have hte crop factor which multiplies your focal distance by 1.5. this would be very usefull when shooting wilde life... a 300 mm lense becomes 450. Now the same lense on the D700 will act like a 300mm but will have more room to crop the image as it's got more pixels and therefor do a post capture magnification which still is not as good as the crop factor. now if your lense was a DX lense then you would be shooting with 5.1 MP so then the clear advantage is for the D300.
Not sure how this relates to marco and scenery shooting so maybe search it out further.
I have been waiting for some time to upgrade and when the D300 came out I said this is it but then this new move from Nikon pushed me to wait a lot more before investing this much money in a body. Not to mention the change of lenses collection and it's results if tey revert back to DX lenses...

Well, you would never have to revert to DX lenses... A full frame lens will always work fine on a good DX body. The multiplier is there for DX regardless. Basically DX lenses exist because they can be made cheaper than the same lens as an FX, not because they do a better job at the DX format. Basically if you have a choice between DX and FX versions of similar lenses, choose the FX format if you can afford it. Most of their pro quality lenses are FX anyway (including the 105mm macro).

Got a little click happy, the D700 will be here Friday. Shopped around and found a great price on the body (cameta) also picked up the MD batterypack.
As far as the lens, I'm selling the 18-55dx and 55-200dx with the D40 and will be upgrading to the 24 - 70 F2.8 and the 70 - 200 F2.8 or the 80-200 f/2.8 ED AF-D
As far as the DX lens go, kinda useless to use them on a 700, only the middle part of the sensor is used, why limit the camera.

after a lot of research, decided on my 1st new lens. Purchased a Sigma 24-70mm 1:2.8 EXDG... Only negative I have to say about this glass is that it's a beast, talk about a heavy lens and the fact that it uses a 82mm kinda blows.
I've done some photography with this lens and my D40 and the optics are amazing.
The 700 arrives a this morning!!!!!

These are just "aim and shoot" images with no WB or compensation or any other adjustments, I can already see an drastic improvement in the resoultion and optics, this FX sensor is amazing, give me a week or so and my new images will make my older postings look like junk
Still trying to figure out the manual controls, so this is a heavily cropped image just to see details. Wow...I can see that I'm on the right track and can't wait to master this camera.

Only thing that blows is that I was going to get out of the hobby about 9 months ago, I got rid of all my rare and unusual stuff, all my aussies, blasto's, mostly LPS and now I'm down to a few cool looking items to photography...... and an empty 215 starphire sitting in my living room, I just wana curl up and cry...
