Damage on Flame Angel's head, Help please.

Hello, recently i upgraded my 37 gallon FOWLR aquarium
(, of 1 and half years old) to a 55 gallon. Before i moved my Flame Angel to the new tank(, which i have had him for only two weeks.) I notice damage on his head. Its just above his eyes it appears the red layer of 'skin' looks to have been peeled off or bitten off but i don't think i have any fish more aggressive then it. After seeing him he acted normal for a week since when i saw the wound. Then today i saw him swimming in spirals. Physically aside from what i mention his body is perfect... not sure how to treat him or is he basically on his way out and should i put him down? Right now his in a net box in a different tank? From looking back at him now he has slightly stop spinning but only slightly from before. His in a dark lighted tank in one of my Mantis Shrimp tanks. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. (Ps - and forgive me if i posted this on the wrong board.)

I'm not sure exactly what the damaged area looks like but I had a very similar experience with my Potters. When I got him from LADD I didn't notice anything on his head because the room and tank were purposely left dark for acclimation purposes when the tank lighst came on the next day I saw this.

After talking with LADD (they thought it was a fungus) and several members here and other sites, I came to the conclusion that this was an abrassion that was caused by the fish running into a sharp rock when I introduced him to the tank. It was very dark and she had no way of knowing the lay of the tank so I think this is the best theory. Plus I only had one B/W Occelaris in the tank with her. I did not remove her from the tank. I stepped up feedings and used garlic as an additive. She didn't eat for two days but then started eating very well. Within 2 weeks the abrassion was gone and here is what she looks like now.

Not sure if this is the same thing but wanted to let you know if you felt like your angel still has a fighting chance. HTH.

Looks like that but here...

His swimming a bit better maybe because his in a confined area and in the dark.

Wow - looks like a chomp to me ... I hope it heals soon. how about food soaked in selcon? lot's of viteys

Sadly i'm snowed in and i can't get him anything till several days and i doubt he has even that. :( His swimming funky and he can't even get to the food to feed. So i fear he'l get weaker every day till... yeah.

Though the big chunk does look a like it could have come from injury, what about the smaller abrasions on the side?

Don't know whats wrong, maybe a disease or some sort of nutritional deficiency? When you look at both sides of the fish, are the smaller abrasions symmetrical?

I'd also offer him plenty of macro, if you're not already.

edit: just reread about the spiralling. Sorry to say, but it doesn't sound good....

The smaller abrasions are new i have only noticed it after the photos were taken. Before hand the wound was centered only on that large chunk that you see above. From looking at him now it appears that these smaller wounds are focused just on the left side. Also if this would help, his spiral movements are in a clockwise motion. Also seems that he has found some stability spinning a lot less.

Just thinking out loud .. Do you think your mantis shrimp could have did this? Could it be harassing the flame still?

Oh no, the the Peacock Mantis that the Flame is currently staying in, had just arrived a few days ago in a 20 Long gallon. The Peacock(, Helena) doesn't leave her burrow and doesn't pay much attention to the box net and hypothetically if the Mantis did it...lol the Flame would be dead long ago. When the Flame Angel got his wound he was in a totally different system, 37 gallon. Co-inhabitance being with gobies, a small yellow tang and a pair of clownfish. The Flame only got worse when i transfer it to the 55 gallon from the upgrade system of the 37 gallon i mentioned in the 1st post. So i'm at a lost on how he got that... could he have rammed against a rock? or the gobies had tag teamed on his bum...lol Shrugs.

Hole in head, some people say it is from bacteria infection or lack of nutriant

feeding vitamin supplement will help. I saw that on emperor angel before

Hole in head is caused by flagelleate protozoan or intestinal Parasites. If your angel
is losing color or pooping white it is intestinal parasites. Give him some Vitamin A and D
and if you believe it is caused by internal parasite, you have to medicate them. some people use Hexaxe by tetra and JBL makes one also or you can add some garlic and light
dose of formalin in their food, but getting good nuturitaint and having good water quality
is the key

I thought hole in the head in freshwater fish had different causes to that of HLLE in marine fish? In marines I always thought it was related to inadequate nutrition (especially greens), possible reaction to carbon dust, etc... not to parasites as such.

Thank you for all you guys help :) However, sadly he died last night...well more he was dying and it didn't look to pretty so i put him down as humanly i can think of. So before i get another one ether the sane or different i will have these recommendations on hand, with use if a hospital tank.
