Last Friday at the LIRA meeting I overheard Jarrett telling someone about how much he loved his Koi and what great pets they were. I guess I missed the first part of the conversation because I only learned from his post yesterday that he lost nine of them. Anyway, I chimed in that I had a terrific little pet pipefish that I had collected locally last August -- she (definitely a female) did this cute little dance when I came toward her tank, and eargerly ate mysis from my fingers. My Seahorses eat from my hand, too, but they don't have the super friendly personality as little Ms Pipfish did.
So last night I do a water change in her tank (a Marineland 5 gal acrylic hex), and then decide to do a more thorough cleaning -- took the cover and filter off and bring it to the sink to disassemble and clean the impeller -- put it all back and crank it up -- much better flow. Her tankmates are a much smaller immature Pipe and a local wrasse (Cunner) -- I see both of them but not her -- there's a pile of live rock on the bottom and I assume she's hiding from all the disturbance, but JUST to be sure, I check all over the floor with a bright flashlight.
This morning I found her dried up on the floor. AAAAAGGHHH! WHY didn't I see her last night? How the F did I miss her? I am bummed.
@Jarrett... my condolences on your Koi friends. Even though my tiny friend was ridiculously smaller than your guys, she was a beloved PET. It's amazing how attached we get to them. It also amazes me that something with a brain the size of a pinhead can exhibit such responsiveness and friendliness to a human.
