I'm thinking of adding at the same time a few chromis so they school, and a single starki, all small sizes.
Will this work in a 300g reef, and if so, how many chromis would you recommend.....TIA

I dont know about the chromis as so many people have had problems with them killing each other. I had 3 in a 210g for 2 yrs with no issues but Ive lost a few in my big tank. I think the starki would be a great addition... mine is pretty calm and one of my favorite fish.

+1 about the Chromis... Years ago I couldn't kill the damn things. Now I can't keep any alive.

Is there a explanation for them to kill each other?
I had 6 - C.viridis living like a big happy family together.
They got replace by 12 - C. cyaneus, well its been a month and only 2 left, and can still see some aggression among the 2 survivors...

I would opt out on the Damsels. Many people use them to cycle their tanks because they are hardy fish. After the tank becomes established and you want to add more fish, they can become the greatest bully. They are very territorial and can stress the new more desirable fish you want to introduce. I would stick with Chromis's. I have (7) in my 180 gal and they seem to be doing fine. One particular one has greatly out grown the others. Only time will tell if he becomes a bully
