Damsels are one way you can get a slice-of-reef-community in 100 gallons. They're intense homebodies, and quirky. I've kept them as a community in two tanks over time. I know them pretty well. And one just surprised me. I have a monster dascyllus, a medium dascyllus, a couple of juvie Fiji blues that are increasingly involved with each other, and until lately...a tiny little yellowtail that I worried about, because he is SO tiny the big dascyllus could almost make him a mouthful. I knew where he lived, in a hole in the rocks, but he stopped coming out for food. And then one of the Fiji blues was using his hideout for a passage, and I feared he was gone. Sigh.
Two days on, I catch a glimpse of blue over in the big gal's digs. Tiny little guy had apparently had enough of the rowdy blues crowding his space and moved over to room with a dascyllus about the size of your smartphone. Safety. The blues aren't going to come over there, for sure, and there's this tiny fish, weakest in the tank, rooming amicably with the big gal. You can see them both in this photo: the little guy is to the left at 7 o'clock of the big gold domino.
