Damsel "Dory"

I couldn't help but think of a few recent threads today- My family and I were at the Tennessee Aquarium. In their reef tank, they have the blue and yellow damsel, but no hippo tang. In their stingray touch tank, they had about 10 damsels, and only one small hippo tang. My husband, who can identify saltwater fish pretty well, thought that they were all Dories at first.

The blue and yellow damselfish is beautiful, but they are aggressive. The only damselfish that is peaceful is the Sapphire damselfish. It is blue and black.

Wish I had know about the Starckii Damsel before buying a yellowtail. What a beautiful fish...Looks like a dwarf angel and amazing color! Also supposedly not as aggressive and eats algae!

Here at work I'm getting a lot of pressure for a "Dory", I'm really glad I read Sk8ters post because I am thinking about going with the Damsel, as they are much hardier than Hippo Tangs. As I have hundreds of little hands a week reaching into the tank it's always a challenge to keep the tank's denizens happy and healthy.

The yellowtail, the azure, and the orange-bearing version of the Fiji blue [I think it's the males] are different fish often mistaken for each other, and they are not the same in temperament. Aggression is also extremely dependent on tank size and population. Damsels regularly take a 100 gallon tank to afford peace and quiet, but the percula clowns and the bona fide yellowtail damsel are capable of being fine in a 30 if not overcrowded. Yes, they are all damsels. The azure looks extremely like the yellowtail and is a cranky little guy who should not be in a tank under 50 gallons. Look carefully at pictures and be sure which you're buying.
